Jebkebitz, I ordered a CD today that has your avatar as the cover art. Dorati conducting Schoenberg, Webern and Berg.

I've got Arrau's set, used to have Moravec. I'd give the nod to Arrau's set, one of the best demonstration's of the Chilean Pianist's tone. Ashkenazy has his moments as well.

You just brought a big smile to my face. Arrau is king in the Nocturnes IMO. I also like Tipo (EMI, OOP), Wasowski (also OOP), Moravec and early (2 mono sets) Rubinstein - for sets.

Curiously, Arrau never seems to reach these heights in other Chopin works. The 1950s Ballades (hard to find) are very good, as are the live Preludes on APR (also hard to find), but his special love (and respect) for the Nocturnes really brings out the beauty in these works. Every phrase is caressed and delicately conveyed. Pure bliss!

It's a painting by the artist Charles Demuth from 1928 called "I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold". I saw it at the Metropolitan Museum of Art when I was younger and have always liked it.

I must disagree. I find Arrau's Chopin generally quite satisfying.

In addition to these that are all great, I like a lot Tamas Vasary's DG recording from the 60s.

I don't think we are in disagreement, I find his Chopin satisfying across the board too, I just find his Nocturnes to be much more satisfying than say, his Scherzos or his studio Preludes.

I got those a few years back, but only listened once. I will listen again soon and see what's up.

I've had the Vegh set for many years. Different packaging though. I suspect I paid more.

    Another Classical Forum Appreciation giveaway.
I have decided to sell off all of my vinyl collection. I have some sealed classical vinyl. First to PM me gets them for nada.

Karl Bohm conducts the Weiner Philarmoniker Beethoven Symphony Three on DG
Lorin Maazel conducts Ashkenazy at the ivories with Tchaikovsky First Piano Concerto on London
HVK conducts the BPO with Schubert's 9th symphony on Angel

    Must take all three.

Nice offer for somebody Roser River Bear

    Heres an upsetting story.

I'd been looking out for a copy of Schwarz' Mahler 5 for a couple of months now. I finally found one and ended up bidding 30~ and winning it. Little did I know that for some reason Schwarz is sometimes spelt Schwartz and there is a reissue of this CD out and available for like $5. That said the version I won is a 95' "Ultra Analogue" release, whatever that means.

    sigh.

Does anybody know if there is a difference in quality between these two?

Now there is a pianist people tend to overlook for some strange unknown reason , another is Entremont

There is also another Philips edition of it. The first ( if I am correct in the release - sequence) with that one, having just the complete "Nocturnes"...nothing else.

The first one (same mastering as this OOP slim box on Philips) [IMG] sounds a bit clearer on my stereo. The piano tone is somewhat blurry on the second one.

I just listened to some of his Nocturnes and found them to be too relentless for my taste.
