My first Brahms cycle was Leinsdorf on vinyl (as a cutout).

Had that on vinyl. My DG DFD/Schubert lieder box has a version with Moore.

I've seen this Moore recording as well. A little later isn't it? Have you compared the two?

No - I no longer have the other (or any vinyl for that matter).

Now listening to "John Dowland - Lachrimae 1604" performed by The Consort Of Musicke directed by Anthony Rooley on L'Oiseau-Lyre.

None of the usual Consort Of Musicke vocalists on here. Instruments only.

I must have had this version at one time or another as I have a fixation on Dowland's "Lachrimae". Favorite version is Savall/Hespérion XX, this appears to be the current incarnation of Savall's classic recording:

What a nice piece, never heard it before. Are there any modern instruments recordings with vibrato? I could find only one mono recording on spotify.

Wait, why he repeats the same piece seven times with only minute variations?

Not minute variations but divisions, like the method frequently used by Beethoven in his late sonatas and quartets. Give it time, it's subtle, it will grow on you.

I liked the Stravinsky. The Bartok seems to be well done, if you like that sort of thing.:hide:

Is the Bartok the complete score or just the suite?

It is complete (Sz. 73). And it is a very good one. Its lack of an ultimate degree of savagery is compensated by the impeccable playing of a great orchestra. In a way it's an immaculate mandarin.

Yes, when musical enough, one can play noth premodern and modern music - and everything from between.

Actually, just recently I heard from radio a work by Bartok, played by Bartok & Szigeti together, sometime in early thirties. Pretty rough sound, but at least it was impossible to call it typical, mediocre, to majority addressed music & playing :)

While using a piano instead of an organ might not appeal to purists, I vastly prefer it! True, it lacks the color of an organ, but I just like the clarity it provides. Zesty performances and crystal clear sound.

I have posted about this companion disc before with the same forces. I enjoyed it very much.

Now listening to "Bach - Goldberg Variations" performed by Gustav Leonhardt from the "DHM 50th Anniversary Edition" box set.

Nicely recorded harpsichord - no harshness at all.

Noe enjoying more of this boxset; the Beethoven violin sonata recordings from 1955 with Boskovsky. When I got the image, I noticed that the price of this 31 CD box is down to $80 over at amazon.

Leonhart recorded the Goldbergs three times, right? Vanguard, Teldec and finally DHM. This has the nicest sound and the coolest performances. The WTC he recorded for DHM about the same time has similar virtues, though might be too rhythmically stiff for some. I really enjoy Scott Ross' quirky version for Virgin:

Now playing "Vivaldi - La Cetra / 12 Concertos, Op. 9" from "The Vivaldi Recordings" performed by Christopher Hogwood and The Academy Of Ancient Music on L'Oiseau-Lyre.

    Featuring Simon Standage on violin.

To be honest, I did not even know I have this LP until this evening since I never cataloged my LP collection like I have for my CD collection. There were no personal computers when I was building up my classical music LP collection ... LOL

What do you think of the recording?
