JS Bach keyboard works can be a landmine for many celebrated pianists. While Helene Grimaud is an excellent pianist, I just did not care for her Bach. The WTC by Barenboim was also a disaster according to a number of reviews I have read.

Now playing CD5 from the following box as I am in the mood for some JS Bach Cello Suites. A long-forgotten box by this lovely cellist ...

I like this set very much. Faust is my favourite violinist of "modern times" and her performances with Melnikov are top-notch.

How do you like Isabelle van Keulen? I enjoy her somewhat limited number of recordings ...

Isabelle is OK; she's done quite a lot with (forte)pianist Ronald Brautigam, especially live.

She certainly has not been well recorded. I love the RCO under Bernard Haitink and Colin Davis. I also follow the likes of Ton Koopman, Jos van Veldhoven and the late Gustav Leonhardt because of my strong interest in baroque and early music ...

Excellent performance and the SQ is quite decent as well. The outboard DAC has certainly helped to enhance the playback quality of these recordings that were mostly made in the 60's and remastered in 94 ...

I think my earliest Angel LP is the first Angel—A Maria Callas LP from the mid-fifties. Capitol did some magnificent mastering/pressing back then.

What are your thoughts about the Jansons era? (If he had anything to do with the RCO Live label, we're all indebted to him....)

Now playing LP1 from the following set from my Bach LP collection ...

A low quality image from Amazon - LP's images are notoriously difficult to capture via digital camera since most scanners cannot deal with this large format ...

He never convinced me. I like his Rachmaninov with another orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, and his accompaniment with the Berlin Philharmonic of Leif Ove Andsnes in the Schumann and Grieg concertos, but that's about it.

Not a single pop/click on side A on this Pro Arte LP, a long defunct American record label. I am amazed ...

He is miles ahead of some of the younger hot shot conductors in the US. I have a good number of his recordings with various orchestras ...

Somehow I don't think that will be a favorite of Stuart's

I finished this set today with the DVD of the two Piano Concertos and the Violin Concerto. Pollini turns in rather low voltage performances, but Batiashvili plays with great passion and uses the rarely performed Busoni cadenza, which is basically a dialogue between the violin and tympani. Very good sound and picture.

The sonics are spectacular, and the RCO is truly an orchestra of virtuosi, especially the winds.... Gatti and the orchestra make Berg sound sexy-- the music's akin to a deconstructed, gauzy version of Mahler, or Hollywood film music.

I just put it in my Amazon cart. I already have a couple of versions of it. I am a big fan of 20th century music.

You won't be sorry, believe me. And it helps that, as I said, the sonics are terrific.
