With that little Liner you see at the bottom of the photo, a paintbrush that enables me to use acrylic paints to make a line drawing on [heavily prepped] canvas.

Now listening to this disc; booklet says this Mahler's 5th was recorded live in Vienna. I guess the CSO came to Europe to do it because at that point Sir Georg Solti was too old to travel; who knows?
By the way, this disc kick a$$ - performance and soundwise.

Possibly because he wanted the sound in Vienna, interesting after what happened with the analog recording, made in Chicago, then played back in Vienna and recorded via the loudspeaker array to get the right sound. Weird.

Wow. Weird indeed; I didn't know that. Would you please post a link to that old edition? Thanks.:)

The booklet of the November 1990 live recording I was listening to today states : "This recording was made using B & W Loudspeakers"

I can't say that I like the covers on these re-issued Achive sets, but they are a great value by offering such amazing performances and excellent sound at a low price. This one is no exception:

The original covers were so much more attractive, such as this one, for instance:

Very well balanced and unpretentious production. It seems though that the mics were not so close to the instrument, as I can barely hear any finger sliding on strings or creaking of the instrument (I kind of like the real sounds).

For those interested, eclassical is having their annual Advent sale, 1 album from Harmonia Mundi and one from BIS half off each day this month.

One of today's is Emma Kirkby and The London Baroque - Handel in Italy

To my mind, the CSO brass section has no rival in this (and similar) music...power, finesse, fire, soul, they are just unbeatable.

This is a spectacular SACD from EMI Japan. I didn't think EMI was capable of recording with such clarity, warmth, and weight. It's a live recording in Berlin Philarmonie Hall (presumably...all of the notes are in Japanese!), so maybe that helped rather than using a studio. I love the completed 4th movement--it's quite dark and contrapuntal at times, but it ends in a blaze of glory. Rattle and his BPO boys do it all justice.

These Trio sets are excellent. I own a bucket load of them, and the performance quality is always noteworthy. Especially the Prokofiev concertos.
