I've been listening to several Pinnock and Hogwood recordings with their respective groups in the last few days and they were all wonderful, without exception. I slightly prefer Pinnock's English Concert because the band sounds tighter and technically a bit better, though I admit that it's really comparing apples and oranges, given the various recording dates.

 

One of the best recordings of Don Juan I ever heard

I assume you are playing CD's from this box. What a massive box?

 

Yes, I believe it's 142 CDs & 2 DVDs. The only really large box I own.

 

A treasure.

 

At just under $400 on Amazon, it is quite reasonable ...

I think you may have mentioned a 78 group in the past as well--at least, somebody has. Thanks for the invite; I wish I had time to say grace over more than the CMC!

 

I sat through all 5 Carter Quartets a few years ago--that was an endurance contest for all involved.

 

I own some of Feinberg's compositions, but this is my first disc by him as a performer--wow! He plays with such beauty and soul. The sound is 1959 mono, but it is perfectly listenable.

I think I paid something like $140 for mine.

 

At under $1 per CD, it was a better bargain ...

 

Got mine from Amazon Canada for Can$104 plus change and shipping.

 

Mine was around half that. I already had like 1/3 of the set, but for that price, I could not say no.

 

Listening to the Schumann Symphonies from this set...Kubelik treats this music very well, IMO.

 

How's the sound? Not too loud? Any NR?

 

I had (& still have) quite a few of the 50s & 60s recordings on CD. I took them to one place to see what I could get but they weren't buying any classical.

 

Schnittke's 3rd Symphony is a bewildering away of "quasi quotes," as he calls them, blended into a sometimes chaotic haze of sound. I think I like it...Anyway, there's no question about the demonstration-quality sound, though--wow!

I think I would be quite happy not having this CD in the box ...
