Anytime. This must be only the second time I listen to this LP in almost 30 years ... LOL

The title of that set is misleading, Abbado only recorded the Adagio, with the Vienna Philharmonic. He never did the full 10th in any form, nor did he record the Adagio again.

78s sound delightful on a Thorens, even better if you also have tube amps that have dedicated 78 (like my Fisher X-101) or mono LP settings (like my Scott LK-48).

I started buying 78s when I started buying classical LPs,right at the start of 1990.Almost entirely from thrift stores. My oldest are two 1908 Victors by Wilhelm Bachaus from G&T stampers.I bought right up 2013,when shellac pretty much stopped appearing at my local stores.

Tomorrow evening, while the rest of the U.S. is watching the Super Bowl commercials and halftime show (plus, from time to time, football), I will be attending a dialog between Ian Bostridge and Jeremy Denk on "Die Winterreise." To prepare I am giving a first listen to the Fischer-Dieskau/Perahia recording from the Perahia mega-box. Not surprisingly, this is not one of the highlights of the set. DFD was 65, and his voice was well past its prime. I also don't care for the Sony sound. (To my surprise this was actually released on SACD in Japan.) Nonetheless, the music is magnificent, and listening with the text in hand tonight should help me appreciate the discussion tomorrow.

How do you like it? Not a lot of pianists will touch Islamey. That may be the most technically difficult piece in the world of classical music.

While Fischer-Dieskau was great, I like the following version ...

I probably have close to 10 versions but only one is in the LP format ...

Now playing the following LP from my Bizet collection. This may well be the only Munch's recording I have in the LP format, though the rest of his recordings in my collection are probably all SACD's in the RCA Living Stereo series ...

I'm just not a real fan of "The Planets." I've listened to each of my two recordings once, and I suspect it will be a while before either gets a second listen.

I have an earlier and better performance by DFD from the early 70's in the DG Schubert box set. I had a recording he did for EMI even earlier on LP, but I do not have that on CD. I do have a two disc set of his Schubert lieder from his EMI days. And I have his Brahms lieder, including a song cycle with Richter.

The Phase 4 sound of this LP is excellent and rivals the clarity and the dynamics of a CD recording ... :righton:

Unfortunately, the LP jacket sheds no light on the identity of this woman ...

Unfortunately, Google does not do "find that match" ... :D

It also does not look like Munch ever recorded the complete Bizet opera.

I have primarily gotten to know a little about Katchen from his Brahms box. His performance of the Rachmaninov piece was quite good in this recording. I am not familiar with Islamey's work to make any call ...

One of the few holes in my Phase 4 collection.Would have thought I'd have turned it up by now.
