Now on the turntable, record 4 from the "Ten Centuries Of Music" box set on Archive.

Rameau - Pigmalion and Troisieme Concerte from Les Indes Gallants performed by Orchestre de chambre des Concerts Lamoureux led by Marcel Couraud and featuring Andree Esposito, Claudine Collart and Edith Selig.

Anybody else have some of these old Archive cloth covered boxes? I have one other - Bach Magnificat & Cantatas. SQ could be better; kind of dated recordings.

Are they really cloth covered or they have some special texture? I have a bunch of these DG Archive boxes as well ...

These are what we are missing from our CD boxes - 1. Cloth covered CD cases 2. Full-sized libretto or liner notes with color photos of the cast ...:crazy:

Thank you ALL for your recommendations!! I would say that I have heard of most, if not all of these opera. I can also say that I have heard/seen a few of them on cd/DVD and television. I look forward delving into the Black Dog Opera series of book/cd combos that I have as well as grabbing DVDs of your recommendations. My wi-fi radio is set to wake me up to WQXR's Operavore stream. I love it. I've heard some wonderful things. Granted, they are not complete opera at that time of the morning but they still stir my desire to hear more. Thank you all once again.

Unfortunately, A-B comparison with Emma is not be possible because they performed different Italian Cantatas ... :sigh:

And, in the case of the Das Alte Werk Bach Kammermusik albums, the actual sheet music!

Giving Abbado's Mahler's 2nd a 2nd listen and finding it much more satisfying this time. Some surprising choices, but they now seem to work.

This is the Karelia I have...the sound quality of this recording is not good, it sounds like the orchestra is a mile away and there is virtually no presence or much warmth...

The two or three Karajan/EMI discs I have just don't do it for me in terms of overall sound...to me it's distant, dull, and not very compelling. The performances are fine for the most part, though.

This seems to be a common problem for many EMI recordings ...
