Listening to CD 2 of Paternostro's Bruckner set and enjoying it even more (for 9 euros incl. shipping can you complain?).

It's one of my favorites. Maybe second after Bernstein. I don't have it in that packaging, though. I have the original version. I don't know whether it would have been remastered or not. It was so good the first time around, I can't imagine anyone's wanting to mess with it, but you never know.

It is a killer 8th. Second to Hiatink with the RCO though IMHO.

    Never heard that one personally.
I have had this copy since it came out (1991) and have liked it a lot.

Thanks Jay! I'm deciding between this 8th by Sinopoli and more recent one by Wit. The latter got mainly positive response, while the former was criticized somewhere for lacking 'the true Thousand' personnel - supposedly, Sinopoli used a single choir when a double is required. Notwithstanding, I actually liked samples (and even the choir doesn't sound that small), and this twoofer is going at eBay for cheap, so I may pull the trigger...

As for the sound - you really never know, DG is known for remastering even digital-era albums...

Thanks, guys! I was curious about the Shaw version of Mahler 8 as well, but probably I'll try to score the Sinopoli first... (And someone inside me, who lives forever in a communist paradise, wants the complete cycles by Bernstain and Haitink...)

It's a correct post depicting the genius of Bruckner and Wand. Can there be enough of their adverts?

Colin Davis made a good number of very impressive recordings with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra as well ...

I meant that my musician's habit usually insists me that anything that went wrong can be managed in a way that anyone believes it wasn't wrong, it was intended (seriously, it's THE rule when you play concerts). :shh:  Your post contains a nice re-posted pic of Wand's set, so it's already a fortune.

Edit: not to mention that we got a little bit closer to the start of CMC thread #9 as well.

The Bernstein version that's in the box set is my favorite M8.

Is New York Philharmonic the orchestra that actually plays here? (amazon.com says LSO and Israel Philharmonic.)

Been quite a while since I had it in the tray.
Got it new in 1990 and it's in my top 5 fav Piano Cd's ever.
