These funeral cantatas are deep, rich and moving. The Ricercar Consort are now two for two with me, and I will continue to purchase their performances. Having four different composers on one cd is always risky, however, in this case it was with obvious care that the pieces chosen would flow throughout in the entire disc. If you enjoy cantatas that pour slow throughout, definitely put this cd on your wish-list.

Now listening to Bruckner's Sixth from the LP box I picked up yesterday. My guess is that the previous owner was a fan of 4, 7 & 9 because the Sixth sounds unplayed:

I've long been very fond of the Gilels/Reiner account of #2. As to no. 1, my favorite account, second-rate orchestral accompaniment and all, is Friedrich Wuhrer's with something billed as the "Vienna State Philharmonia Orchestra" under Hans Swarowsky, a mono Vox LP from the '50s. (I was not as taken with Wuhrer's account of #2.)

His 5 & 8 are among my favorites. I haven't heard the rest. I've bought so many Mahler CDs over the last 22 years, but I always come back to Bernstein, so I haven't felt like shelling out for a $100+ box set. Thankfully, I gave up being a completist long ago.

I was lucky to pick up a mint used copy of this set for $30 or so last year. I figured it was time to finally listen to it.

Have you heard the Abbey Simon/Leonard Slatkin version on Vox? Recall it as being unusually lyrical and well engineered.

I must have heard the Horowitz/Barbirolli performance in the past.

That is the one I have on the shelf. I will have to give it a listen.
