Note, however, that the CD pictured is not of the symphony but of the "Eroica Variations" for piano solo, so-called because they are on the same theme as the final mvt. of the sym., which actually came a year later. Beethoven had some kind of thing going for that theme; he also used it in his ballet "The Creatures of Prometheus" and in a set of contredances. As to Weingartner, his is a fine reading that in its day got eclipsed commercially when Toscanini's first set came out. Weingartner was the first conductor to commit a complete cycle of the Beethoven syms. to record, although his accounts were recorded over a period of many years and were never conceived as a "complete set" as such--had they been so issued, the set would have taken 42 records. He recorded the 9th twice, once just after the advent of electric recording (in fact, if memory serves, it was the first electric recording of the work) with chorus in English; then, in the '30s, he recorded his celebrated remake with Austrian forces. He recorded no. 5 and no. 8 twice as well, but unfortunately not no. 6, and that recording has a problem not entirely uncommon for early electric recordings: each "78 RPM" side picks up speed as it plays because the early electric cutting lathes' motors were weak. Thus, the pitch across side breaks does not come close to matching unless you carefully adjust playback speed throughout each side.

As to the "Reformation" sym., I, too, much enjoy the work. My favorite recording is by Mitropoulos with the Phil.-Sym. Or. of NY.

Another wonderful suggestion from Dave (Sonic). The bassoon playing was a treat when used. I also enjoyed the sound of the arciliuto (see below) on a number of the sonatas.

Yet another baroque ensemble I will need to explore more.

Though a lot of corners were sanded off in the process . . .

If it's cold 'n' steely yer lookin' for, try Heifetz and Toscanini—it's got a hard and glossy shine!

Decided to spin this SACD. No more needs to be said about this one. Is that one musician playing every instrument in the orchestra? It is so tight sounding it is almost eerie.

This one definitely shows the difference in the care of pressings. Crystal clear and even makes my rig sound like a million bucks.

Yep, the DG HvK LP with the Linz sounds like a million bucks too.
Been playing the Schubert Piano works by Nikolai Demidenko on hypèrion once again, this time strictly relaxing on the sofa and tbh, sometimes I couldn't believe how beautiful this sounded. Splendid - some technical feats with the left hand playing a steady rhythm while the right hand runs over the keys in cascades of pure joy, but always remaining mellow and subtle.

Miss at your own peril !

Spinning the 5th from this. Great recording of a totally weird *** work. Has anyone yet totally agreed on it's structure? No matter-sounds great to me.

One of my all time favorite tandems. Even more so than with Szell at the helm.
