I wanted to post this info, regarding the new Moravec 11CD + 1DVD box set, in case it is helpful to others. I believe that I have all the Moravec CDs that have been released and wanted to see which performances in the new box were new to CD. I just checked the Supraphon site and came up with 97 minutes of previously unreleased, on CD, performances: Beethoven - Op. 28 Pastoral sonata - 1970 Schumann - Scenes from childhood and Arabesque, 1984 Brahms - Op. 117, 1-3, Op. 76/2 and Op. 79/2 - 1984 Ravel - Habanera - 1963 Janacek - On an overgrown path (3 selections) - 1983 Martinu - Etudes and Polkas (3 selections) - 2001 Of these, the Op.28 Pastoral Sonata, Scenes from childhood, Op. 76/2, Op. 79/2 and Op. 117, No. 2 have already been released on CD by Moravec, but they are different performances. And of course, a DVD is also included that is new. I'm still deciding if I will be passing on this set, since I already own so much of these performances and I wasn't happy with the most recent mastering of the Nocturnes by Supraphon.
Correction: There are 128 minutes of previously unreleased, on CD, performances in the above box set (listed below.) This, combined with the unique DVD included, probably means I'll be ordering this set. Beethoven - Op. 28 Pastoral sonata - 1970 Schumann - Scenes from childhood and Arabesque, 1984 Brahms - Op. 117, 1-3, Op. 76/2 and Op. 79/2 - 1984 Ravel - Habanera - 1963 Janacek - On an overgrown path (3 selections), In the Mists and the Sonata - 1983 Martinu - Etudes and Polkas (3 selections) - 2001
I very much enjoyed this disc especially hearing the early Bartok Rhapsody for the first time. Alexandre Kantorow Brahms: Piano Sonata No. 2 Brahms: Rhapsody No. 1 Bartok: Rhapsody. Op. 1 Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsody No. 11 Bis, 2020 CD/SACD As you know, Kantorow won the Tchaikovsky Competition last year along with the seldom awarded Grand Prix.
Now enjoying CD2 from this 2CD set. CD2 is all Chopin, except for Clair De Lune. The sound and playing is absolutely gorgeous.
Just about to buy these on the used market but was just wondering what people think of the sound quality of these compared to the remastering done of them in 1999 on EMI Classics? Wondering which to buy.
Hi Paul, With EMI I usually find that the early masterings are better, as they have less processing, less noise reduction. In this case, I haven't compared, though, sorry.
Hi George, yeah I tend to agree. I can get both these and the remaster for just a few pounds so may just get both to compare
I found the first movement of the Op. 85 Piano Concerto an invigorating interpretation. Johann Nepomuk Hummel Piano Concerto, Op. 85 Piano Concerto, Op. 89 Stephen Hough English Chamber Orchestra Bryden Thomson, conductor Chandos, 1987

I'm not normally a fan of Abbado, but I really like this recording. Enjoying it now, after a stressful day.
I listened to this disc of Saint-Saens concertos again today. Alexandre Kantorow is an impressive pianist.
BACH: Brandenburg Concertos - Paillard Chamber Orchestra conducted by Jean-François Paillard (US RCA Red Seal pressing)
While Cortot, one of my favorite pianists, was his mentor, I can't seem to come to terms with his Nocturnes. Among other things, I just don't like his phrasing.
Well played. This is disc 6 of the 2019 Music@Menlo festival which samples some chamber music from the 1920's. 1920-1922. Ravel: Sonata for violin and Cello.
