Here’s some sad news. RIP Radu Lupu. We heard a terrific concert featuring him with the Boston Symphony a few years back, and his playing was absolutely mesmerizing to me. Radu Lupu, celebrated Romanian pianist, dies at age 76

One of my favourite classical pieces; I have around 15 versions, including another Marriner. I have to add this one to the pile one day.
1961 recording. Philharmonia conducted by Robert Irving. Giselle premiered in 1910 at Ballets Russes.
RCA Victor Red Seal released Irving in excerpts from Giselle with the Covent Garden or. Apparently he did a series of such records of ballet standards; I also have him with the same orchestra in excerpts from Coppelia and with the Philharmonia in excerpts from Sylvia, both also on Victor. All are mono LPs--LM 1092, 2035, and 2036, respectively--and the Giselle is also on a set of four 45s, WDM 1397.
Just listened to Kubelik's Beethoven Symphony No. 1 with the London Symphony. I thought it was very engaging. Kubelik London Symphony Beethoven Symphony No. 1 from Rafael Kubelik: Complete Recordings on Deutsche Grammophon 66 discs
It's an interesting cycle. Have you listened to his sixth from that box yet? It's a somewhat deliberate reading, of interest as an alternative to some of the other interpretations I have.
MUSSORGSKY: Pictures at an Exhibition/A Night on Bald Mountain - Symphonic Orchestra of the Kirov State Opera conducted by Valerij Gergiev, Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Konstatin Simeonov (Leningrad Masters CD)
It's a favourite symphony of mine, which doesn't seem to be common; so my favourite is also not widely admired, the 1977 Karajan. I also like Giulini with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Cool. I have the '77 HvK, I should revisit it. I don't like his '63 6th at all. By the way, the 6th is my favorite Beethoven symphony and one of my favorite symphonies overall.
