I have that Legendary Master Series double LP that pseudopod posted and a couple great sounding 45s of the hits on Capitol's Silver Spotlight Series. Thanks for this thread, I'm gonna go dig 'em out today. Here's a favorite of mine not mentioned yet, "Sittin' In The Balcony"
As many of you are aware, Eddie Cochran played guitar on sessions for Wynn Stewart in addition to the enjoyable single 'Big Door' by Gene Brown. Any fans of classic country artist Gene Brown? Gene Brown
Huge fan of Eddie Cochran's guitar playing! Some guy you've probably never heard of .......... named Brian Setzer thinks it's OK too!
I've been listening to the surviving recordings of his 1960 UK visit a lot in recent months. Incredibly disappointing that his appearances (the actual films at least) on Jack Good's "Boy Meets Girls" series were all destroyed shortly after airing. The audio (kept by an engineer and by fans with hand-held mics and reel to reels) show what a good live performer he was even if the British musicians backing him weren't totally up to it back then. They all learnt a lot though. I've mentioned it before here I think but it's worth repeating, the number of guitarists who have said they got the chance to speak to him on that tour and when asked about how he was able to play guitar like that he said he used a B (plain string) instead of a wound G, well it seems to come up time and time again and then all these guitarists told other guitarists. That alone seems to have been a simply massive contribution to British musicians of the time when you read about that period.
59 years ago we lost one of my rock n roll hero’s Eddie Cochran. Always remembered and his music lives on. R.I.P @ShakyPaul
Eddie, so young, had a bunch of iconic rockers like C'mon Everybody, Summertime Blues, 20 Flight Rock, Somethin' Else, Nervous Breakdown - but I think this specific version of Milk Cow Blues might even be his biggest influence on rock history. Listen to the guitar solo at 1:30-2:00. Those exaggerated, distorted guitar-slinger gestures sound way ahead of their time - I think Eddie might actually have been the first Guitar Hero. The vocabulary he's using predicts the mid-'60's ascent of Clapton, Page, Beck, et al. I *bet* those guys were paying rapt attention when Eddie came to the UK on that fateful 1960 tour. Maybe watched the TV show that this was on...
When I’m in a record store with a vinyl record of Eddie Cochran & one of Buddy Holly...I’ll pick Eddie. Darryl
