Some of that recent, awful Johnny Depp as Whitey Bulger flick was shot near me. It was probably August but they had huge mounds of what looked like cotton all over the place to conjure up Christmas magic.

What's preposterous to me is expecting filmmakers to get every little aspect of realism right. We know it's fiction and therefore we should know that some aspects of it will not match reality. It's up to us the viewew to use our imaginations.

I remember that they filmed the Rocky II proposal scene in winter at the Philadelphia Zoo and the bear just happened to come out as they filmed. It was totally unplanned.

There's a scene in The Exorcism of Emily Rose where the snow is lightly falling. Pretty damn creepy, that and the fact she's possessed by the Devil. :shake:

I've traveled through time on numerous occasions, and let me just tell you that those "Bill and Ted" movies get a lot wrong.

These "cold movies" come to mind that I think were done well:

The French Connection - NYC looks mostly frozen and I think actually was during filming
Doctor Zhivago - one of the snowiest, iciest looking movies ever
Nanook of the North - doesn't exactly make me want to be an Eskimo (brrrrrr!!!!)

Affliction 1997 was another good "snow movie".

Battle Of The Bulge, the one with Henry Fonda and Robert Shaw? That film is famous for having almost NO snow or fog, the two things that made the German offensive possible. I think all the tank scenes were filmed in Spain, IIRC.

Was the bear in another cut of the film? Did he eat the tiger that came out in the theatrical version?? :)

There is a scene in Mad Men where Betty drives into a parking lot with snow on the ground, on the cars, everyone is dressed up perfectly in their 1960s winter finery...it looks pretty New York winter authentic.

Per the commentary track, the scene was filmed in Pasadena, CA on a 100 degree day.

It's been a while since I listened to that commentary, but I remember it saying for one of the battle scenes in a forest there was no snow a few days prior and they were all prepared with fake snow. Then just before shooting began there was a mild snow shower that was just sufficient for a white covering. I thought they also said they obtained permission from German authorities to film that scene close to actual events. I could be wrong. I'll go back to my blu-ray and review.

I thought you were going to say Panda! I know I wrote in a :) after my post, but I want to make sure to point out that I was just kidding. I really didn't remember much about that scene, so I had to watch it on YouTube. That's the only reason I knew it was a tiger!

The recent "The Mountain Between Us" was very realistically cold.

Cold as the frost on a champagne glass, etc.

It's dangerous being in here while at work. You can't split your brain up. Plus, can't abuse youtube usage
I knew you were kidding, don't worry.
I think Sly ad-libbed some line about the tiger, didn't he?

Depends on where your are and the temperature, often, in real life, you can't see and " visible breath".

Most breath, including the scenes with Jack & Rose are in the water, are all CGI in post.

As my wife pointed out to me, those Lifetime/Hallmark movies that are inevitable this time of year, you can never see the actors' breaths despite all the snow on the ground.

I can't remember the scene at the moment, but the movie The Social Network got ripped for adding fake breath as an effect when the actors were supposed to be out in the cold. I guess people felt a bad visual effect was a bigger distraction than not seeing breath. (Whatever the scene was, it wasn't in the middle of a huge snowstorm like in Murder on the Orient Express.)
