I drove by that glacier a couple of years ago on a work trip, at the same time of year they had filmed those scenes. It was definitely as cold as it looked on screen!

From now on, ain't nothin' gonna make me feel as cold as seeing those poor firefighters in Boston last week, wading through hip-deep slush on city streets, to help people get out of their cars! :yikes:

While living in Chicago in the summer of 1985, I saw an ad for crowd extras for the Goldie Hawn football film "Wildcats", to be filmed at Lane Tech High School. The ad indicated we needed to come in winter gear and be prepared to stay all day. I seriously thought about going, but when the day came, it was boiling and in the mid 90's....so I skipped the filming and went to the Cubs game.

So if you ever come across this film, imagine how the performers and extras must have been suffering....

Ice Station Zebra... if you forget it was filmed in Culver City, California.

"Where Eagles Dare" has always had a very 'cold' look to it, partly due to the bluish color balance in some of the snow scenes. The location shooting certainly didn't hurt either.

"Dr. Zhivago" had locations in Spain, including the famous "ice palace" sequence, and they were shooting in the middle of summer.

The TV movie “Into Thin Air” was set on Mount Everest—one of the coldest-looking environments I’ve seen.

The frozen arctic scenes in the DeNiro version of “Frankenstein” and the 1998 tv mini-series “Moby Dick” seemed miserably cold.

The British horror film “The Children” had beautiful scenery of a white snowy landscape throughout the movie.

Welles filmed the horse sleigh scenes in Ambersons in an ice house, or so the legend goes.

The problem is all the film companies chasing tax breaks. Have you noticed just how many movies are shot in Georgia these days? "The good news is that you'll love your fur coat for the winter scenes. The bad news is that we're going to shoot them in Atlanta. In July."

A favorite "winter" film is the little-seen Some Girls with Patrick Dempsey. It's set in Montreal at Christmas time, and he has to rescue the grandmother who thinks he's her long dead husband.

To me, Fargo accurately depicted what it is like to live day to day in cold temperatures with snow and ice. I grew up just as far north, and somewhat east, in Wisconsin.

In the rarely seen Warner Brothers series, The Alaskans, shot on the back lot in Burbank, like all of the Warner shows, you can see the actors sweating under their parkas.

Thinking of Roger Ebert's line about the Paul Newman film Nobody's Fool: "Great movie, if you like snow."
