I absolutely agree with that. All of the best songs from 3IB are on BDC. But 3IB does have its moments...The Weedy Burton, anyone? :)

Also, the second side of the Standing on a Beach cassette works pretty well as an album.

The Smiths - Louder Than Bombs

The similar, UK equivalent, The World Won't Listen, also qualifies:

Cocteau Twins - The Pink Opaque. Released in 1986, it was the first official release by the band in the US and consists mostly of songs from their 1982-1985 EPs rather than their albums. Also, for a long time the only release that included the song Millimillenary.

Elastica - The Radio One Sessions

It's the closest thing to a real follow up to the debut that we'll ever have.

The Menace is nonsense, they're in their death throes coasting on fumes until Justine gives Elastica a mercy killing, and Justine has even disowned it.

The Radio One Sessions contain the best songs(and better versions) that would wind up on The Menace....Only Human and A Love Like Ours recorded by the original lineup.

It also has Brighton Rock which should've been on the debut. The sessions of the songs from the debut are amazing. Much grittier.

4 live tracks and an excellent track order, feels more like a real album not a compilation. Pretty terrible cover though.

Each of which are arguably better than their last five albums.

But funnily enough i don't feel the same way about the 2nd B Sides collection D Sides...its great but too many remixes to feel like a genuine studio album

Definite core album for REM fans as it compiles stuff (a fair number of which are covers) not available on studio albums.
