Lemme tell y'all about The Band....
' Music From Big Pink ' is often tagged a ' classic' album. The Dylan connection, Harrison and Clapton raving about it , critics drooling over it.
Me, I could never get into it. Slow and dirgey . A couple of good tracks surrounded by bone dry dullness.
I did however totally dig the follow-up , another ' classic' album , ' The Band '. Great album!

Let me add The Grateful Dead to your list. And I agree about Jefferson Airplane but have to add an asterisk ( * ) because I do like ' Surrealistic Pillow ' But is it a ' classic' album? Not really.

' Exile On Main Street ' is considered a ' classic' album , is it not?
Then why isn't ' Goat' s Head Soup '? Or is it?

Station To Station has some fantastic, arguably career best, songs but if you want a six track album to be a classic, I’d argue you shouldn’t include a comedy song about a sentient television with Chas ‘N’ Dave piano.

I have to agree with you. It has some really enjoyable tracks, but they are few and far between. Still worth owning a copy, but not exactly one of those earth shattering albums where ever track is amazing.

Yup, just can't get into her either, and I've tried. Don't get her solo stuff and don't exactly find the Big Brother/Janis material all that compelling either. Cheap thrills is a good album, but not the entire thing. It has its moments. Her voice does have a raw power to it on some of those tracks, but nothing that makes her all that much better than other female power singers of the time.

It's all about "critical consensus" - what the majority of them think.

As for why or why not, we're talking about art, so there is no real explanation, it's just subjective tastes.

I was at the infamous 2003 Orange Peel King Crimson show where the 30% female audience freaked out Mr. Fripp as much as it did me. Since then I recognized that in many ways, the old ways have faded.

I suppose along with the definition of “classic album” being debatable, sure. But I don’t think there is any question it is his best-known solo album, and surely Lou Reed is an artist who has released a classic album...

When it's that good, then it should be included. I've not once thought it doesn't fit.

Close to the Edge is classic. Its stature as one of the greatest, probably the greatest single statement in prog assures that.

    Yes album? Maybe. Ditto Fragile.

90125? Nope. It was popular and had a couple radio hits which is unusual for Yes. Both that's not what makes Yes classic. 90125 is hopelessly a product of it's tim , meaning it's no classic.

I disagree here, I think every song on TBA hits the mark. Not as well as AJFA or MOP, but still hits that mark.

I think SP is widely regarded as a classic of the psychedelic era. I'm personally a little underwhelmed with it, despite some great moments, partially due to the production. I find that a lot of this material comes through more forcefully live, though I know you don't care for live albums.
Exile is a classic, though not everyone loves it. The general consensus on Goat's Head Soup is that it's a notch or two down from their peak on the preceding albums. Some consider it to be a bit less fresh, a little too murky and druggy, though it certainly has its advocates. I like it quite a bit myself, though not quite as much as what came before.

Difficult to tell on the net.

I actually went and listened to Pretzel Logic yesterday as recommended by others in the thread. I didn't like that either, could put up with a track or two in a mix. I could understand however people speaking highly of it, if that sound is your kinda thing then it's pretty well done.
