I hope this is the right place to put this. The title should be self-evident. Does anyone have recommendations for programs that convert FLAC files for use on a new Mac?

    Or cautionary tales?

    Free is great.

    Thanks in advance

Use XLD and its free. Never had any issues using it on Macs.

I use a programme called 'MediaHuman Audio Converter' to convert flac to alac.
It will actually convert anything to anything and it's free :D

Free audio converter for macOS and Windows

I think it's what you were after?

dBpoweramp is a nice paid option and, as already mentioned, the free XLD.

I use Fission, which is inexpensive commercial software that also has some basic editing and track-splitting tools. But it's hard to argue with free.

Lots of love for XLD here. You can drag and drop encode entire directories with it. Great stuff.

XLD was recommended to me. I installed, tested, and it worked fine on late 2015 iMac, Mojave. Can't beat the price. But it'd be kinda nice if Apple would just natively support FLAC. (I have no issues with ALAC, just sayin'.)

XLD, so easy. I send some money every now and then. I think the MP3 encoder does a good job. (I use 224k VBR highest quality, to stuff music into little jogging portables. Sounds great! As good as lossless? Eh, close enough to not care).

I don't currently play or store music on my Mac, but I have a question about XLD. One of my favorite dBpoweramp features is its ability to rip a CD to multiple formats simultaneously. I rip to FLAC for home, and AAC for my car (no FLAC support). Can XLD do the same thing?

I don't believe it can compress to multiple formats simultaneously. But it only takes a few seconds to select an encoder in the options and drag the source files onto the XLD icon to encode.

    Yes, XLD can.

In XLD's Preferences, in the Output format dropdown you can choose Multiple Formats, then click the Option button to select and configure the desired output formats.

I hope that made some kind of sense.

I used to use Max and absolutely loved it, but it's 32 bit and thus not compatible with OS X.15. Of course it will still work on non-upgraded computers.

    Edit: Another vote for XLD!

I've never used Max - but there is currently an unstable beta version (0.9.2b2) currently available that is 64-bit, no idea how useable/stable it is but may be worth a try for any previous users who are now using macOS Catalina.

I recently started re-ripping my CDs to lossless using XLD, which is working well facilitated by it now having access to the AccurateRip database.

  22. Forgive my slight nitpick: it's called macOS 10.15.
