    Courtney Love: Crazy or Not?
    by Joal Ryan
    Apr 18, 2002, 3:30 PM PT

Fans and critics alike have long joked about it, but now her late husband's bandmates want the question answered once and for all: Is Courtney Love crazy?

In court papers filed last week in Seattle, surviving Nirvana rockers Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic have asked a judge to order the former Mrs. Kurt Cobain to undergo a psychiatric exam. And do it before June 1, no less.

Grohl and Novoselic aren't just being curious (Is she or isn't she...?). They're just getting down and dirty in the ongoing battle over control of the Nirvana legacy.

At issue is whether Love, 37, can break a business partnership she formed with the Nirvana guys in 1997. She sued to dissolve Nirvana L.L.C. last June. The two sides have been warring in court ever since.

"There is clearly an objective basis for believing that Ms. Love is not competent," the new petition filed by Grohl and Novoselic says. (The latest documents are available online at TheSmokingGun.com.)

To make their case, the Nirvana alums' court document highlights the, um, outspoken Love's colorful past: her hiring and firing of "countless managers, attorneys and band mates"; her drug use (as "openly" acknowledged by Love herself); and an almost-fistfight last month with "young recording artist" Christina Aguilera (as "openly" claimed by Love herself, natch).

The petition relies a lot on Love's own words. (That's what you get for being outspoken, we guess.) A couple of key quotes (from an Internet posting and an interview with MTV) have Love saying she was "stoned" when she agreed to establish Nirvana L.L.C.

Indeed, Love's side has argued in court that she shouldn't be held accountable for agreeing to go into business with Grohl and Novoselic because she was "significantly impaired" when she signed the paperwork.

Still, Miss Love ain't jumping at the chance to undergo a psych exam, as requested.

"Presumably, [Grohl and Novoselic] would select the psychiatrist and specify the scope of the examination," Love's attorneys said in a document filed with the court Wednesday. "Shades of Frances Farmer."

Frances Farmer was an outspoken 1930s-era leading lady (immortalized in the Jessica Lange starrer Frances) whose one drunken-driving arrest turned into an 11-year-stay in mental hospitals. She is the namesake of Love's daughter with Cobain, Frances Bean.

While Nirvana fans know that Love was regarded as the Yoko Ono of the grunge world well before Cobain's death, her relationship with Grohl and Novoselic turned especially nasty last year during a dispute over whether an unreleased Cobain track, "You've Got No Right," could appear on a forthcoming Nirvana box set. Grohl and Novoselic wanted the song included; Love didn't.

Love got her way on that count--"You've Got No Right" will be MIA when Heart-Shaped Box comes out in December.

A hearing on whether Love will be forced to undergo the psych exam will be held Friday in Seattle.

In case you're keeping score at home, Love versus the Nirvana guys is only one of the court cases that's keeping the stripper turned rocker turned actress turned tabloid regular busy these days. She is being sued by Universal Music Group for delivering only two of seven promised Hole albums. And she, in turn, is suing Universal, accusing it of "unconscionable and unlawful" business tactics and challenging the standard artist contract.

It's kind of sad she is being treated this way, and the bandmates are getting away with a cheap legal trick...so much for it being the New Millenium!

If she were Paul McCartney, everyone would be saying what a business genius she is.

She's a self-absorbed lunatic. I read an interview with her in Entertainment Weekly a few weeks back where she went off on a rant about how Grohl and Novoselic were talentless hacks who had nothing to do with Nirvana's success, and she should be in control of everything. Um, last I checked, the songs were credited to the group, not just Cobain. And Foo Fighters have been much more successful than Hole.

The most charming part of the article was when poor Frances Bean comes in the room, coughing and hacking like a pneumonia patient, and the chain-smoking Love wonders what's wrong.

    All,

My vote is for very emotionally troubled in need of Psychotherapy just like her late husband so desperately needed. Suicide and self-destructive behavior are clear signs of deep emotional problems. For Love, she is both self-destructive and destructive of those around her.

If you want to have some fun check out her posts at the Velvet Rope. She's a wacko alright, but also very smart, manipulative and charming when necessary. Her id is "courtney love".

    Do ya really think so?

Despite being unpopular to the Beatles fan base - none of Yoko Ono's detractors have ever questioned her buisniess ability in putting the Lennon estate back in order while John played house-husband for 5 years. I don't think society is treating her in a sexist manner, they are treating her as someone who wants to gain 100% control of all things Nirvana, and back out of a buisness arrangement she signed. And criticizing a guy who went from drummer to front man in a band nearly as popular as Nirvana is clearly a hollow argument, especially from someone whose output is nowhere near as consistent as The Foo Fighters.

    Breaking News - C-Lo Speaks

I'm not sure why I find this stuff so entertaining. :) A lot of it is hard to understand unless you are schooled in Courtney-speak. As usual, I find myself thinking "hey, she's right!" I have to slap myself to break the spell. She's good I tell you.

    12:13 p.m.

    uh..mental incapacity. Described.

    Its a polite term for the following;

    Psychotic
    Schizophrenic
    Catatonic
    severe Manic-Depressive
    Alzeheimers

And anything else as extreme as to require a guardian, loss of all decision making power, loss of legal guardianship of children, 24 hour nursing. That sort of thing.

By the by, In Holly Milleas interviews two Acadamey Award screenwriter/directors told her that they felt i was one of the "best writers in America"
The EW editor lady didnt put that in, but i do wonder if it would change the word"rant" to"art"
with enough alpha males who i enjoy emailing and snailmailing with...i suppose it would.
That wasnt to be grandiose, i was flattered, but i get very sick of the word "rant"
when in fact its quite good writing, just ****ty spelling.

Mentally Incapacited does NOT include the following

    Hystreonic
    Narcissitic
Tempermental ( i think thats called "leadership" on thise with scrotums)
Paranoid ( especially when you DO find your phones tapped and your security team DOES spot you being followed on occasion)
    Grandiose
    Morose
    Extroverted
    A Bad Speller.

and all those other MMPI2 type things.

If indeed this is the sort of judge who would allow this sort of showboating from a solo practicioner ( the first attorney quit for obvious reasons- he was of good standing in a good firm) who invites journalists from all over to the "circus" he wants to have "fun" at then i suppose well come up with a bunch of nice references from movie stars ,politicians and a note from my shrink.

I seriously doubt it however its a little too insane..whoops.."insane"

That thing is boring, Noit WAS boring, now its classic horror. Not scary just desperate.

Jill knows her ass is dangling in the wind. Noone has brought down a music row attorney ever, but the mask slips and slips. andthe Bills from Paterno look more and more missapropriated,
Disbarment may be a pain in the ass but if shell do this- hell if you ALL do these sorts of conflicts and get away with it for generations maybe one of the music row guys have got to go down to reform the system.

My Attorney is above board and queit, he does not leak paperwork, he would not leak paperwork to a media source for anything.
    Its atasteless practice.
the showboat does,he also knows better than to make sarcastic remarks in front of a good justice in ones writ.

If your curious as to where Judge Alsdorf stands his initial opinion can be found somewhere, within it he stated very plainly the following ( fairly accurate- not verbatim)

"wether her ideals are the most self serving and crass or wether her ideals are selflessa nd for the good of all humanity is irrelevent, fair contract law is not reserved for the pure of heart"

Obviously the implication that i may possibly NOT be pure o fheart is a little rankling, but thats irrelevant, he gave them a dressing down for personal attacks, and they continued to make them. guised as "explanations"

there is no explanation to explain the absouloute crass and flamboyant disgrace the spending, misapropriation and extreme over billing with zero consulatation or notice to me, the cadre of conflicts, from the personal business manager being the "llc" business manager to the presidencies that Mr Cobain enabled many to enter into, the power he sprinkled on so many, Mr Grohls recording contract for one is FASCINATING

In my entire life i have never heard nor seen a contract as absoutely fantastic as that of Mr Grohls, from keyman clauses to ownership[ of masters to staggering royalty rates to PENALTIES upon failure to market, for the ninth member of Nirvana- or perhaps the tenth, i forget, he made out like a bandit.

Irregardless of the Fraud perpetuated on me by a confused and very large group of divergent lawyers, irregardless of the fact that the first lawyer who got confused about a tax return for the "band" "Nirvana" and suggested protecting me from any of then "trashing a hotel room and having me be liable for it"(yes this is a statement of fact) and irregardless that she then dropped dead on the conference table in front of six other stunned lawyers from a brain anuerysm ( the case was blamed as cause of death due to stress- this is actually no small factor) and iregardless that music row lawyers do not and can not efficently cite case law or litigate and that the power base for music row lawyers ( ihave been told by a good source that there are less than 150 laywers in this country who can do a major label deal and only half of them are competent) is one thing only
    leverage.
Because obviously."Ill see you in court" isnt a real fact, and irregardless of the stream of lies about a fictional "washington law" was perpetrated upon me,

    all of those things aside,

This is a ridiculous contract/partnership/corparation. It simply does not function. And thelack of functionality does not come from myself. and we shalllet the court decide who the heir is. Ones Family or ones ( about to be disbanded) "band".

I own more than 75% of its assets, yet i do not recieve any accounting whatsoever onany level.

Perhaps it REALLY is time that a music row lawyer got brought down, in th emanner that ken Hertz almost was ( he missed by one jurist)
But "all" Ken did was sell a tenor sax player to a demo deal to a Sony exec client of his.

    Illegal? yes.

    comparable to this situation?
hell no. The Fraud and Conflict here is so thick that measure so desperate and pathetic that my publicist tells me even people not exactly fans of mine didnt have the stomach to write about it.

She also told me that women were especially offended by this, I have the same rights as any widow anywhere who works. Any Widow or Widower, anywhere.

The only laws that do not apply to me that apply to many of you are libel and slander and parody laws because I am a public figure.

All other laws are my right as an American Citizen.

The software designer and the receptionist who my husband gave equity in his company to ( and actively and aggresively denied them any sort of partnership. Made that clear in writing and verbally) get themselves a shrewd and unethical lawyer who forms a cadre and surrounds me with lies about what willhappen to me if i dont sign this piece of garbage?
and second opinion on music row simply doesnt count since i can find hardly any music row attorneys who can utter the simple line
"i dont know- lets call a specialist"

so i end up in a court battle with the software designer and receptionist who are now, notin 97. not at any other point demanding a "mental capacity" test.?

because they dont like me. well tough ****.

They are greedy and awful, theyve always been, and they will Nirvana to fail in so many ways, and their hatred for Kurt burns in ways im glad he doesnt have to see.

But if i have to givemy left arm. my daughter is not going to be 25 and left with this piece of **** mess. This tragic swamp of lies and contradictions and un told amendments and outragous accoutning.
No. thats not whats going tohappen here.

the slipping and slithering and insinuations need to cease, these people need to pick up thier royalty checks and be gone,

this lawyer seems a Seattle media whore ( maningn ot a very sophisticated one) hes proven that with his leaks

and hes also a liar. but not a very good one .
i certainly know better than to have any emotion about a showboat attorney. Im spock about guys like him.

gleefully downloading crap off the net and throwing it at judges who never allow it into record. its a tired sight to see.

Noone competent in the community would take this case, just some sucker who thinks its circa 1992.. Iknow who is driving the bus here, and i want whats mine and my families restored and in working order.

it isnt out of any feeling of anger or vengeance that i know Jill should be disbarred, many music row lawyers would have done the same crap, but maybe its time the lawlessness amongst music row attornies was called into question.

Maybe a discolsure of clients is neccesary

as for the showboater.......the backpeddling statement"she siad she was incapacitated in 97 we just want tosee if she still is" upon reading Yale Lewis's filing is spectacular.

    in a bad way.

Yale lewis is the man who fought Zack Horowitz for Jimi Hendrixes estate, he tested some ink on a document and found that that ink was not created in that year,- through its chemical design, large ink companies change their formulas yearly- this was just one of many of the frauds perpetrated on Al Hendrix and his family, for over 20 years.
Offshore accounts, "investments" in south america , Even a Partnership with the EST founder funded with Hendrix money- we cannot guess how much was stolen and rerouted, Hundreds of millions it is possible, less it is possible too, what was converted to narcoterroist money? what was converted to Warner Ehrhardts flashy suits? noone will ever know.
But dont tell me whats going on here, because ive caught them redhanded, and THIS facetious nonsense is thier response. You arent in this case- you dont have to stare at the ugliness of this case every day and you cannot know the pain of this case.

It doesnt matter wether you "like" me or not.

On top of being immoral and morbid?

    This case is actually Boring.
I have a lot of confidence in the judge and my counsel.

UMG is waaaay funner. and unless i take Berliner to the wall, UMG effects the most change.

AS friend at a major got a big talking to from BMG, all tyhe executives did, she said they were talking about the business model being ready to collapse and how it was imperitive to connect to artists like the "old days"
She told me they started using a lot of my postings from notes on the table that they brought.
    my little rants.

I was actually really happy about that, UMG cant see it but maybe BMG can. Good for them.

I get to oped the Wall Street Journal this week too. wich im insanely excited about.

and then im done with the Court in ney for a month so i can go work.

    Thanks
