can't speak for a collective "we" but I definitely need this cover.

 

...and this one - Aztec Camera - Jump -loaded version with the gonzo anti-guitar solo at the end

 

...and this one Meat Purveyors - S.O.S. - as an aside what is it about ABBA that lends itself to great cover tunes?

 

David Byrne does Whitney Houston and I can't see the world not smiling

 

...and finally I find this cover of Stayin' Alive to be breathtaking

 

So cool in 1990; so cool today.

 

I'd probably go with John Cale's version.

That's the definitive one for me.

 

The Clash, I Fought The Law. For me it's the perfect cover in honoring everything great about the original and still building something new out of it.

Out of the 340 known recorded coverversions I thought I'd pick one of my personal fav's.

 

Russ the Rippington shows the world How It's Done.
Luscious.

 

I would love to hear it covered by In Living Colour and also by the Pentatonix and by Gregorian. (Not necessarily in that order). Such a true classic. It even managed to fly under the radar of the content censors.

 

Lynn Anderson's cover of "Top of the World". That cover reached #2 on the US country singles chart. The Carpenters original was just an album track and probably would have remained so if the success of Lynn's had not brought attention to the potential of the song. Both versions are lovely.

 

One of my favorites

 

Glen Campbell - "Times Like These" Takes a great Foo Fighters song and turns it into a timeless (if underrated) classic.

 

Johnny Cash & Joe Strummer - "Redemption Song" Great version of the wonderful Bob Marley track.

 

For my money, the definitive version of an already great song:

If it's the penultimate (which means it's next to the ultimate), then what's the ultimate? I'd say Eddie Cochran's original, YMMV. If
the measure of a great song is how many different but great versions it can support, then there's at least three of this one (2 already mentioned and Blue Cheer).
