Anyone know why we still have mono mixes only of these particular CCR songs...The Working Man, Proud Mary, Bad Moon Rising, Lodi and Sweet Hitch-Hiker? The recent box set would have been a great opportunity to have these songs in true stereo. Are the multitrack tapes still around?

That's why 3 of the 5 you mention are on DCC in stereo and it's only a matter of time, hopefully, before Steve gets the rest of the CCR catologue. ;)

Which 3? You must mean Proud Mary, Bad moon and Lodi. I have all the DCC CCR's, and those 3 don't sound like stereo versions to me.

Don't know about The Working Man (I'd have to check), but the other 4 are normally stereo, just *very* narrow. On the recent "remasters", though, I believe they summed some or all of them to mono.

Wide stereo versions of those 4 exist, but they are not good in some ways.

Like Luke indicated, the mixes of the aforementioned songs are not mono, but very narrow stereo. I have read articles by John Fogerty and also Fantasy mastering engineer George Horn and they corroborate this fact. Fogerty wanted to get a "mono sound" but also wanted to eliminate the "hole in the middle" effect, so mixed the stereo very closely. There was an album released at the height of quad, "Creedence Gold", which contained discrete quad mixes of Proud Mary and others; these quad mixes were inadvertantly remixed into stereo for various compilations over the years; these are not mixes that Fogerty intended nor endorsed. By the way, try to find Steve Hoffman's remaster of "Cosmo's Factory" if you can.
