If you listen to much reggae on your iPod, you may want to look into headphones from the House Of Marley. I picked up a set for about $60 and they bring the bass like no headphones I've ever owned.
I gotta give some love to my man from the Ivory Coast, Alpha Blondy. Two in particular, both from the mid/late 80s, Apartheid Is Naziism, and Jerusalem, recorded with the Wailers. Excellent stuff.
I found these two releases for about $1 each. Anyone know much about them? 1) Culture = International Herb 2) Big Youth - Dread Locks Dread Didn't know much about either, bought them coz of the covers. Sound pretty amazing though! Really digging them.
I saw these a couple of weeks ago at Future Shop and they sounded pretty good. I am considering the small portable can-like one for work and the big wooden one for the garage/outside. I don't use headphones very often and earbuds only when I use the snowblower or used to ride a bike.
Probably already mentioned up thread, this Upsetter Dub record is an absolute must... Upsetters 14 Dub Black Board Jungle - The Upsetters Also pressed up on Clocktower Records (without Upsetter permission) with fewer tracks and issued as....
The Auralux is the one to go for, unless you can find and afford an original Jamaican issue, really hard to find the Auralux vinyl though, I must ask how many they pressed up.
I've always been very partial to all of Augustus Pablo's output. No doubt no one can afford to be without a copy of that Dub classic Tubbys meet (Pablo's) Rockers Uptown. This Augustus Pablo (mainly instrumental) album is full of beautiful atmospheric music and should not be overlooked. East Of The River Nile - Augustus Pablo
Yes it is beatiful. I also love "Original Rockers". Was it a comp of singles released during a period of his career?
Yet another brilliant (singles based) album from our man Augustus Pablo, full of seriously wonderful mainly instrumental dub sounds - and all very well presented by Greensleeves (UK). Original Rockers - Augustus Pablo
I recently purchased another Lee "Scratch" Perry compilation: Upsetter In Dub (Upsetter Shop Vol. 1) It doesn't appear to have much overlap with the Arkology set and has a heavy sound
Last night I saw a copy of Keith Hudson's "Rasta Communication" in the bargain bin for 98 cents. It's a 2CD special edition on Greensleeves Records. I should probably buy it, right? I've never heard this album, but I read some reviews and listened to some samples and it sounds pretty great.
Grab it, I thought it was a bargain when I bought it on release last year and it was a lot more than 98 cents., the extra CD is well worth having.
Surprised not to see my all-time favorite on here. (Volume 2 has 50 more great tunes, quality starts to fall off w/volume 3 imo).
This is a splendid instrumental Reggae compilation, full up with killer rhythms, and one that should appeal to lovers of Reggae, Funk & Jazz. Mojo Rocksteady Beat - Sound Dimension (Studio 1/Soul Jazz) Presented in good sound quality too!
Great thread. Some things that have not yet appeared in here, not all are crucial but are pretty good. Black Uhuru -- Red Jimmy Cliff -- Struggling Man The Harder They Come (Soundtrack) The Wailers -- Catch A Fire Bob Marley -- Exodus Freddie McGregor -- Bobby Babylon Junior Murvin -- Police And Thieves Hugh Mundell -- Mundell Johnny Osbourne -- Truths And Rights Steel Pulse -- Handsworth Revolution Peter Tosh -- Mama Africa Wailing Souls -- Wild Suspense Sly And Robbie -- Taxi Dennis Brown -- Wolf And Leopards Heptones -- Party Time
Thought there would be more love for the Mighty Diamonds - Right Time. My go to album. Ras Michael and the sons of Negus and Keith Hudson are classics too.
Also I would recomend this compilation form Blood and Fire and Honest Jon's - Darker Than Blue. A stunning comp of Reggae soul - funk covers. Including We People Who Are Darker Than Blue, Why Can't We Live Together? Is it because I'm Black? Ain't No Sunshine etc. I have it on vinyl and you get an awesome cover too, taken at a festival in Roundwood Park, Willesden so I believe (my local park when growing up). I just love the way Honest Jon's package their vinyl. I have the Boogaloo Pow Wow comp and it is a work of art.
