I think I see the resemblance. An eccentric loner who's generally not part of the plot, but serves as the main character's advisor - listening, criticizing, and providing weirdly useful advice. Is that what you meant?

 

That, plus apparently freeloading with no source of income and claiming to be an authority on almost any subject...
