Aimee Mann is drawing birds and singing the praises of Linda McCartney The record of the week is Paul McCartney's “Ram.” I'm so happy to hear Linda singing on this record, and hearing songs about her, in a way that I absolutely did not appreciate when I was a little kid. Paul really wanted her to be involved in his music. It's obviously him going like, "Come on, sing! No, it sounds great. I'll sing along with you. It'll be fun." And when you're younger, you look at it like, "Oh, of course she's trying to horn in." But it really is not super-fun to go on tour and play arenas. And she's doing a job that he wanted her to do so they could be together. And, to me, it's to her credit that she was like, "Alright, I'm game, I'll go along." There are a lot of background vocals on this album done with wit and humor and panache, and it's nice to have her voice in there.
I love Aimee and all of that is absolutely right on. And she of course certainly gets what it's about vis à vis wanting to create/share/support creative space with your significant other, nevermind that Linda does bring that indefinable "extra" (especially on Ram, but on so many other performances - that Paul period will always be my favorite of his because of her contributions as much as what he created then). Thanks for sharing that, @Marry a Carrot.
Coincidentally, I played Aimee's Whatever album earlier today. She certainly ingested doses of Beatles sounds growing up.
Aimee Mann also has a cover of Too Many People, apparently not on Youtube, but available on a Ram Tribute album from 2009: Various - Tom: A Best Show On WFMU Tribute To Ram
yeah the guitar on this album is very much in Badfinger flavor...Jon Brion must have been channeling those sounds. It would be cool to get some more information on making that album!
I so wish Jon would’ve worked with Paul in the 90s. His production for Aimee and Fiona Apple would’ve been a terrific match for McCartney, methinks.
Yeah -- I was just thinking that a Brion-produced "Largo" tribute to Paul might be a glorious and coherent thing. Together with Fiona and Aimee, it's easy to imagine Brad Mehldau (another Brion alum) and others making an all-time great tribute album.
Nice lively version---BUT it is such a great song in general. It would hard to ruin it for someone as well versed in Beatle-type sounds.
You Gave Me The Answer – How Do You Take Your Tea? "Paul: How do I take my tea? I take my tea with some soya milk and one sugar. If I’m really feeling naughty, one and a half sugars… I know, I’m living on the edge! The funny thing is, I’m not a big tea drinker, but at the studio these things become a ritual. You guys have seen me drink it at the office too. It’s like – here’s a bagel, with a cup of tea. And that’s the only time I ever really have tea. I drink it at the studio or at the office, it just seems to fit. I don’t want a big lunch, so just that bagel and tea is great. And yeah, that’s how I take it – soya milk and one sugar."
And yet there was ZERO mention of English Tea for clarification purposes to aid the non-British readers (missed opportunitea!) So I guess we'll never know for sure.
Gotta love Paul framing his lifetime with reference to RPM. A prolific producer of recorded music. And, I might say, beautiful music at that. He's a gift to us all. Been with us through thick and thin.
And yet... for the man who wrote English Tea, there is no mention of what flavor he favors... African Solstice? Apricot Amaretto? Belgian Mint? Black Currant? Blueberry Merlot? Chai Matcha? Chamomile Citron? Chocolate Matcha? Chocolate Rose? Darjeeling Quince? Earl Grey? English Breakfast? Formosa Oolong? Ginger? Hibiscus? Lemon? Orange Jasmine? Red Zinger? Sencha? Vanilla? Caff? Decaf? How am I supposed to go to sleep tonight, not knowing the answers...??
