Just thought I would spread the word that HIGH MOON RECORDS will be issuing CURT BOETTCHER & FRIENDS's Looking For The Sun. The CD and LP both will be released on October 25, 2019.

    • FIRST-TIME-EVER ANTHOLOGY FOCUSED ON CURT'S OUTSIDE PRODUCTIONS!
    • STUNNING 36-PAGE BOOKLET WITH IN-DEPTH NOTES & RARE PHOTOS!
    • FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES!
    • 21 TRACKS on CD & 18 TRACKS ON LP — TWO PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED!

Best known for his groundbreaking contributions to what later became known as “sunshine pop,” and his hit productions for The Association (“Cherish”, “Along Comes Mary”), Curt Boettcher formed the pioneering rock bands The Ballroom and The Millennium, and contributed heavily to Gary Usher’s side-project Sagittarius. A Hollywood-based producer and arranger in the Phil Spector mode—whose sessions he actually participated in—Boettcher was innovative in utilizing the studio as an instrument—an approach that made a lasting impression on a young Brian Wilson. In 1966 and ’67, Boettcher spent so much time at Columbia Studios in Hollywood that some began to call CBS “Curt Boettcher Studios.” Some of the artists Curt worked with include Gene Clark, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Elton John, Emitt Rhodes, and The Beach Boys (among many others). Curt's studio artistry is a master’s thesis in the use of sound and space to elevate music and emotion into art.

Looking For The Sun is the first release to focus on Curt Boettcher as a producer and arranger rather than a performer, highlighting cuts that were released only as singles. Most of the tracks have remained out of print since their initial release. Collected here are 21 tracks (18 on LP)—all sourced from the original master tapes—which Boettcher (and friends such as Tandy Almer, Gary Usher, and Keith Olsen) wrote, produced, arranged, and/or sang on.

Awesome ! Great to see Curt getting some long over-due love. Let's hope there's enough interest for a Vol. 2. I've hoped someone would one day curate a career defining set of all things Curt & Co, so this is a great start. Thanks Steve and Now Sounds !

wow--brilliant. that backing track has a lot of really experimental things going on the backing track, married to a great pop song.

Listening to You Were Near Me by Cindy Malone. Very interesting, and I like it.

Shame Shame by Keith Colley is the same song that became a hit for the Magic Lanterns; he co-wrote it as I recall. Enamorado isn't much as far as I can see (doesn't it date to 1963? Did Boettcher produce it?), but he had a later track called Welcome Home Baby that is truly wonderful '60s pop (though probably not in the same vein as the compilers of this LP were looking for, and probably not produced by Curt).

"Enamorado" has an interesting story. In October of 1963 Keith Colley had a #66 hit on the tiny Unical Records with the self-penned “Enamorado,” which was only the third US hit after “La Bamba” and “El Watusi” to be sung entirely in Spanish. Chet Baker, Andy Russell, and the Sandpipers each recorded their own versions of “Enamorado.” Keith rerecorded the song with Gary Usher producing and the Millennium singing background vocals. This is the version on our new Curt release.

There have been so many great releases on the "Now Sounds" label, but I haven't seen any recently. Does this Curt Boettcher release on the High Moon Records label mean that titles that would have been released on "Now Sounds" will now happen on the High Moon label?

There will definitely be more Now Sounds releases. Some projects of mine make more sense for other labels, based on a number of reasons. Thanks so much for your support!

I'm in! Really cool stuff being offered here. Any possibly a nice compilation of post surf Gary Usher material will be forthcoming?

Not sure I would have included the Sagittarius songs though; aren't those easily available already on CD?

Very exciting release indeed! Very overdue. (Now if they would release some of the unreleased Together Records sessions, THAT would be something.)

As far as I know, about half? However, a lot of those are clearly needledrops, unlike this release which is sourced from original mono master tapes.

...just got my (LP) copy today. Really excited to dig in. Curious if Dawn Eden will discuss Boettcher's closeted sexuality given her ardent conversion to a deeply conservative strain of Catholicism...

How very exciting! Out of town now, but as soon as I get back, this will be ordered. Was listening to "Magic Time" box and reading old reviews on Amazon when I saw this amazing release listed!
