FWIW, I emailed Rhino a week or two back and asked who cut these and from what but didn't receive a reply. Going to keep my preorder in anyway as the 2005/6 LP reissues of Back To The World and Roots that I have are substandard. The 2013 Europe release of the ST debut sounds great, so it'll be interesting to compare.
They'll never tell you. If word got out about tape source or what they did, they'd hear nothing but criticism, and may reduce their sales. Record companies usually don't like to tell anything about the details. We live in the age of the internet, and one word will spread like wildfire, complete with the misunderstandings from those who know very little about the process. That said, I am interested in CD versions. I would like for anyone with the original 70s albums to compare them to the new ones to see how faithful they are.
My box set arrives this week and if they sound as good as the Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin vinyl box sets . I will be very happy.

Looking forward to hearing about the sound on this set. I just bought an original sealed copy of Roots. The 2 cds I have of it sound not very good. I love the MFSL cd of Curtis. I'm happy with the original Curtom vinyl of Back To the World. The original vinyl of Sweet Exorcist sounds like it could be improved. If forum members have poitive reviews, I'm in on this.
Can anyone who has this set on CD report that Back To The World and Sweet Exorcist sound like they have been remastered from the master tapes (as opposed to remastered from vinyl)?
Curtis Mayfield - Where to start? » Short version - they seem to be derived from inferior sources for CURTIS, CURTIS/LIVE! and Roots compared with previous Rhino CD releases, with Back To The World and Sweet Exorcist being sourced from the same poor sources as previous CD editions. The mastering is pretty heavy handed (heavily compressed and sweetened) but then the sources used needed a lot of help. Hopefully Back To The World and Sweet Exorcist have finally been mastered from better sources for this new box which will make all the 2013/14 re-issues redundant to me...
Are there EU and US releases for the vinyl set? If so, does anyone know if there are differences with the quality of sleeve reproduction and mastering etc?

My vinyl box set says made in Europe on the back of the box and on the back of the LP covers. Nothing wrong with the quality of covers and inner poly paper sleeves. Listening to Back To The World now. Great pressing and SQ.
This LP Great pressing and SQ. My CD box set has just arrived. Nice box all CDs in mini replica gatefold covers all made in the EU. Ripping them now to play later.
My LP boxset is out for delivery - can't wait to get stuck in. Noticed that there's a hi-res version available too. Disappointed at the lack of Got To Find A Way, which in a run of near-perfect albums from '70-'75 is probably my favourite.
Playing the Roots LP now for the second time. Funky gatefold drop down album cover. I'm very happy with this vinyl box set.

My set is out for delivery and should arrive before noon. You have made me very excited to get my hands on this and spend the remainder of the day listening to it. Thank you!!
After a random track click round my digital jukebox . I'm very happy with both the vinyl and CD box sets. I probably will at some point do comparison against my other CD versions but right now I can't be bothered because these all sound very good.
