What's this? I've never seen that one before, anyone know anything about it?

Just a collectors edition I believe. Don't quote me on this one though. IIRC someone else, long ago stated that it's the typical mastering of DSOTM and not the coveted first edition Japanese mastering that Steve recommended.

    Anyone?

This is an interesting question. Althought the Lennon "Imagine" in the Eternity Gold series is indeed the original (wonderfully) hissy mix, this one I'm frankly not certain about.

My gut-level response would be to say "No", however, as this was issued almost five years after the original Toshiba release, and I'd just bet EMI had managed to "standardize" the world catalog by that time. They certainly had with the Beatles.

Hang in there, It's on Ebay very often and usually doesn't go for more than $10 -$15. It's one of the more easily available and reasonable Toshiba Black Triangle discs.

Aaron -- do you also have the early Harvest Japan release CDP 7 46001 2?? Is it identical sounding to the Toshiba??

    No, I have
    the Toshiba CP35-3017
    MFSL UDCD 517 UD1 Version
    Mobile Fidelity LP 017
and the SACD version (I'm not liking multichannel very much).

This is also the order my preference of this recording also. (I bought my vinyl used and never really hunted for a great copy of it)

CDP7 46001 may have been the US distribution version where the CD35-3017 may have been for the Japan market. CP35-3017 is like the really good Abbey Road Cd that Tower imported. Maybe Grant (Vinylrec) can confirm.

    Thanks,
    Aaron

I have heard this EMI gold cd. Unfortunately I didn't have either the experience or the equipment that I now do. Even though, my MFSL sounded a lot better even on the Pioneer system that I owned at the time. IIRC this EMI gold CD sounded exactly the same as the standard CD back in '88.

Aaron -- thanks for the reply. Folks seem to be dumping their old DSOTM CeeDees for the latest remaster, so there is a windfall out in the bins currently. I've already let a MFSL UD II go through my hands waiting for a UD1.

I think I'll look for the Toshiba instead as I'm more of a first pressing freak than a MFSL wacko.

So I'm a wacko now Chris? I guess some people are happy settling for second best. I'm not one of them and you're only deluding/cheating yourself as there are still a lot of the MFSL's that are far superior to the "remasters and original pressings".

I knew someone would pick up on that! I am deluding myself -- that's what makes me a freak:D

For this particular title, the consensus appears to be that the original Toshiba betters the MFSL UD1. Since I'm a freak, I'll go after the Toshiba as it appears to be a more affordable option than the UD1. Now, in other cases, the MFSL will be far superior, and I'll go after those.

Can't us freaks and wackos all get along:p

I think the consensus says the MFSL UD1 is better, but to my ears and through my system, I like the Toshiba. The worst that has happened to me is the wife gives me "the look" for having too many versions of Dark Side. Good Luck in your pursuit.

The only reason that I'll allow this particular delusion is that Steve agrees with it, henceforth no delusion. I do plan on getting this first edition Japanese Toshiba pressing myself and will give it the spotlight it deserves.;)

    Signed,
    The MFSL Wacko:p

CP43-5771 is just the gold version of CP35-3017. i.e. same master

Base on matrix info on early Jpn DSOTM cd, I think EMI Harvest CP35-3017 and Harvest CDP 7 46001 2 are from the same master. I'm I right?

    Anyone can confirm this? Steve?

NaZri -- thanks for the link, that really clarifies things as I didn't know that this release was the original Japan pressing for the UK.

Why do I sense that I'm being pulled into a Floyd collecting jones just as bad as the targets:p

Here's how some feel about it.

IIRC Steve himself prefers this version and has said that it sounds just like the master tape.

of course, i lost this auction
and it spiraled into a ridiculous bidding war
    with an overpriced ($43+) outcome.
    :shake:
    maybe, next time?

Can I start a consensus that the SACD is better? Smoother vocals and better bass to my ears. We actually might be to the point where system components are swaying favorite versions over what's actually on the disc or how it's mastered.

To keep in spirit with the original thread topic......... Now's a good time to hunt through those used bins. I saw the Japanese Harvest several months ago in a local store, but passed. Now that I see they're getting more $$ on ebay, I'll probably look a bit harder ;)
