one SLIGHT difference: the alt mix of You've Got a Habit doesn't have those errant guitar notes at the very end like they did back in 02 and on the album mix.
Just listened to the Alternatives & Extras Toy disc 2 and first impression is I like this one best. First of all: you get Liza Jane and In The Heat Of The Morning, both not on the main disc (1), plus in my opinion better versions of The London Boys, Hole In The Ground and Silly Boy Blue (Tibet version) with a more modest Chimi Chimi .... woooh and no silly nose flute. So in order of preference: Disc 2, disc 1 (main) and finally disc 3, which I don't expect to play a lot (the drums are absent and most of the electric guitars which is where most of the improvement was, compared to the 60's versions). But you can also look at it as a surprise package: pick any disc to play a different album version (with different tracklists also).
I noted this in my overview of the set, but I thought that I could be wrong. I am glad to see that you think similarly. It seems like an odd change to have made.
How did you feel about the exclusion of Karma Man on disc two? Personally, it was one or the tracks that I absolutely loved on Toy, with the single being the thing that turned my opinion on the inclusion of Toy in the box.
Maybe the first one was the best, I like that one, plus the original as well. The streaming single phenomenon means absolutely nothing to me, nor does the non plastic box cheapo cassette version
It appears that Shadow Man, labelled 'Album Version' on the various CD singles in 2002 is the Alternative Mix on CD 2 of Toy: Box. I'm guessing the original intended album was as follows (Song order N/A) 1. Uncle Floyd 2. Afraid (Original Mix) 3. "You've Got a Habit of Leaving" (Alternative Mix) 4. "Baby Loves That Way" (Alternative Mix) 5. "Can’t Help Thinking About Me" (Alternative Mix) 6. "I Dig Everything" (Alternative Mix) 7. "The London Boys" (Alternative Version) 8. "Silly Boy Blue" (Alt. Ending Mix) 9. "Let Me Sleep Beside You" (Alternative Mix) 10. "Conversation Piece" (Alternative Mix) 11. "Hole in the Ground" (Alternative Mix) 12. "Shadow Man" (Alternative Mix) 13. "Toy (Your Turn to Drive)" (Alternative Mix) B-sides: "Liza Jane" "In the Heat of the Morning" "Karma Man"
Why they chose to throw away his only unreleased studio album as bonus material with zero promotion is beyond me. Surely no one that's not a fan is going to buy a 3CD or 6x10" 110$ with a disfigured baby face as the cover. Then, what is left to release 6 years after his death, other than tat, remixes & demos we'll listen 1 time ? 2 CD worth of complete outtakes, the Leon stuff, Sound+Vision & the Heathen Tour. They're acting as he left the same Vault than Prince, except he didn't. No wonder the family rushed to take the cash.
I love Bowie, he's my favourite artist (I'm playing him right now in fact) but I'm glad it wasn't released as a stand alone "his lost album!" type thing and hyped to the heavens because to be blunt.....it isn't very good. Being tucked away on 2 boxsets for completist fans is the best place for it imo.
What makes you think we have a right to hear anything from the "Vault"? Your last sentence is beyond crass.
That's interesting, I rate "Heathen" very highly, "Reality" has some good songs imo...and some, eh not so good, but I can happily listen to all of it (well, except for "Never Get Old" which I thought was awful from day one, that gets skipped). "Toy" to me is down there with "Tonight" and NLMD......... though I do think "Conversation Piece" is fantastic, one of my very favourite Bowie tracks.
Has anyone else who has ordered the Toy box from Amazon UK received an email saying that the order has been delayed by a week due to supply issues? Thankfully I have a local HMV so I will probably cancel my order.
Funny you should say that, I think CP (Toy) is the track that doesn't quite fit the Toy recipe in that it seems it lost all energy and is barely managing to get to the end.
Yes, but I'm off to university on Saturday, so I won't get it for a few months... I might take a trip to my local HMV tomorrow, as you might, and see if I can pick it up there.
The 'exclusive to streaming' thing is really annoying! I mean, why?? They've just dedicated a 3 CD box set to an unreleased album, surely everything should be in that box!
I am not sure the Toy box is the right place for the 1970 version of Shadow Man personally. However I fully expect it to appear on a Hunky Dory set at some point this year. We have seen these so-called exclusives before!
Same. I'm surprised they are dating it to 1970, assuming it's the version we've all heard on boots before. I was under the impression that it was a Ziggy Stardust-era outtake from 1971.
