This arrived at Hum records today so Australia now has them. Red Eye Records doesn't have it yet so it may take time to hit all Australian stores. Just put on the I'm Only Dancing CD and this is very low fi (think FM broadcast) so don't think the LP is worth the extra cash!
I listened to the album again, before I replied. I think the album has some brilliant songs, including "Fame" and the title track, but overall it is a bit flat. Ironically, it is also not a really good soul records, because a lot of the instruments are buried in the mix. It may be a better disco record with its muddy, but engaging party sound. I certainly think it is a great record to put on during a party, but if you dig too deep, you may find out that there is not that much substance.
I don't think there's supposed to be. "Plastic soul" and all that. Whatever, I still rate Win and Can You Hear Me among his best songs.
Can You Hear Me passed me by for a long time, then a few years ago I got a pile of Bowie 45s and it was on the B-side of one of them. As soon as I played it on a single it clicked. I remember playing it a few times after each other.
I was only planning on getting the cd as that’s my preferred way for live albums but they didn’t have it in the day so I had to buy the records. I haven’t received the CDs yet (hopefully tomorrow) but apparently the writing is a lot harder to read in the cd.
It's great to hear how everyone is enjoying this set. Annoyingly, my order from Banquet Records has still not arrived. Had a notification on Friday that it's been posted so was hoping for a delivery today. Oh well, patience is a virtue!
CDs finally arrived today, presumably sent via the slow mail coach along the Great North Road from Olde London Towne. To be fair to Banquet they did apologise, saying that they had a month's worth of online orders in one night so they've done a great job in the circumstances. I'm happy with the packaging, I'm no fan of jewel cases and the IOD sleeve looks suitably boot-ish and fits the era well. The CNB sleeve matches my ancient ChangesOne and ChangesTwo LPs sleeves nicely (I listened to them for old times sake this week while making - and declicking - FLAC rips). Back to IOD, sound quality is perfectly fine, obviously not polished but sounds like a proper concert. I like the vocal too (well apart from the weird accent on Rock'n'Roll With Me), those complaining about the side effects of the cocaine can't have heard many Stones live offerings from the same period. The souled-up arrangements are interesting and it's good to have live versions of Sorrow and John (again). I've always struggled with YA, I don't hate it (although I could make an exception for Across The Universe) but I've found it the most difficult album to get into from the classic run (Space Oddity --> Scary Monsters). Having said that, I like the YA versions on IOD so no complaints. Onto CNB next...
Thanks. I don't have any worries that it's not on the way as I have received a notification. It's just taking so long!
That’s what the magnifying glass app is for, and then you’ll rarely have to read it again. Not a lot of info there that’s worth revisiting IMO.
I'm firmly in the former category. It's one of his very best vocal performances, if not the best. And the musicianship is stellar throughout.
I wasn't going to bother chasing round or encourage e-bay flippers with this release as I'm getting to old for this s*** I was walking in Edinburgh today and was lamenting the shops that use to be record stores. In a small area in the center of town I passed 6 locations that used to be record stores. The one left is a specialist dance/techno vinyl store. While walking past , I looked in and there was a small rack with CD's. Top left in the rack was the Bowie Soul Tour CD. Purchase made £14.95. Thank you very much
There was a great store in the Grassmarket I believe it was where I picked up a few vinyl bootlegs back in the day. Glad you managed to find a copy for a good price. It's an enjoyable document of a very specific time.
Ditto, but no sign as of today. Maybe sent second class perhaps? Fingers crossed we receive them tomorrow.
Mine still hasn't arrived. I did send them an email today to ask them to confirm that it definitely was dispatched and they confirmed it had. They suggested that if it hasn't arrived by the 18th September then they will send a replacement or refund me. I assume a replacement won't be available by then so fingers crossed for tomorrow!
Touch wood just a slow post week, due in no small part to RSD. I'm waiting for the CDs of I'm Only Dancing and Is It Any Wonder, and the LP of the latter is still in the pending stages at Banquet.
My copy of IOD arrived on Thursday last week. I only needed CD and didn’t pay silly money for it (my RSD local only had one copy and I wasn’t close enough to the front of the queue to get it so I came home and went for the online option. I have to say none of the so called flaws with the recording are that bad at all - in fact I wonder what the fuss is about. I definitely prefer it to David Live let’s put it that way.
David LIVE, a CLASSIC & the 1st document. Cracked Actor L.A. '74- Great recording properties, but what's with all the CHUMP IT bass notes?? I'm Only Dancing- The Soul Tour '74 -Great!, All the way around. The 1st trilogy!!
Still waiting on my CD from Banquet, confirmed as despatched a few days back. Guessing at 80p postage they are using one of the older carrier pidgeons... Perhaps one just back off furlough and a bit rusty.
