If you want to hear a well recorded, live to DSD album, check out David Elias' "The Window". It's an independent recording but a very good one. More info on his web site at http://www.davidelias.com/
A really excellent album. I haven't heard it in multichannel, but in stereo it's beautiful. Mostly acoustic instruments, fantastic lyrics, realistic open sound that makes the most of the format. It's wonderful that the independents can release a great album like this, and it makes me even more excited about SACD - well, if that's possible. Plus, when you buy it from CDBaby, David Elias will send you a thank you note, and you can write back to him. He has also contributed posts to AA, and is enthusiastic about DSD/SACD. Regards, Geoff
"The detail of the instruments and vocals on the album [The Window] are outstanding and really show what a well made high resolution audio can sound like. This one is bound to be a favorite of folk music and bluegrass fans as well as SACD fans who want to listen to a well recorded album." - Brian Moura, Hi Fidelity Review Ok, sold. Just ordered a disc! Thanks! Incidentally, I also ordered the debut album from Holy Zoo (sound familiar?)
The Surround Mix starts out very subtle and as the album progresses, the mix gets a little more involved. But the emphasis is on subtle, which makes sense for an acoustic performance like this one. On the sonics, I think the key is the disc is a live, direct to DSD recording made by Gus Skinas of the SACD Project's Boulder office. Some real care went into this one.
Thanks for the suggestion. I ordered it from CD Baby. If you don't have these pick em up too. Misty River - Live John Brion - Meaningless Holy Zoo - S/T
Yeah, get Suitcase Pimps "Love is Grand" and Martha's Trouble "Still" SACDs. Both are very cool and cheap! Regards, Geoff
I got the David Elias and Suitcase Pimps SACDs from CDbaby.com (I already had Martha's Trouble for months when I ordered it from Elusive Disc). Haven't gotten around to the David Elias yet, but the Suitcase Pimps is very good. Very dark theme to the lyrics, and the end of the last song "Goodbye" sounded very surreal - very "live" sounding in DSD. It almost sounded like a Q-sound type effect on the last minute or so of that song. I won't spoil what you hear (overall)... but it is pretty freaky and it had me looking around in that one sound effect (the train whistle) sounded very, very REAL (in fact it all sounded pretty "real", even though I couldn't actually verify that . )
Thanks for recommending David Elias, Bmoura! A first class DSD recording! And the self titled release of Holy Zoo is pretty amazing..... There are some great recordings at CD Baby, it appears! Suitcase Pimps sound interesting for the next one....
David Elias has been in heavy rotation at this dinosaur's home since October. I listen in 2 channel. I noticed it was an Acoustic Sounds' recommended in the latest catalog, page 86. What are you waiting for? Support quality new music and quality mastering.
