The Late Show with David Letterman marquee on the Ed Sullivan Theatre has been taken down. I understand Stephen Colbert's marquee will be very high-tech and will take a lot of time and manpower to install.

He should of not, renewed his contract in 2012 but for some reason he did.
I could tell he was bored with the whole thing for at least 6 or 7 years.
Throwing paint off a building and water melons and doing stunts.
Was boring... visiting a deli guy.
Carson left when he was still popular. Dave did not.

When Carson retired there were no other network shows in his time slot. Dave was competing with two.

Carson had already beat all comers that the other networks put up against him in the 70s, and maybe into the 80s. No one came close to beating him in the ratings.

Towards the end, Leno's guest-hosting slots were drawing better ratings than Carson's; that was part of the reason the network went with Jay. He was still popular but not really at his peak.

Dave knew Jay was leaving soon and was hoping he could be top dog for a while (like he was when Conan's ratings when into the toilet)...when that didn't happen, he packed it in.

Technically, not a network show, but, rather, syndicated.

I think this is accurate. I also think Dave wanted to be "the last man standing" when it came to him or Jay.

Yep. It aired as early as 10:00 in my market (10:30 once the station launched a newscast). Arsenio didn't compete with Johnny here, but with L.A. Law and whatnot.
