You guys that have been around a while...what's up with the ridiculous price jump over at the Amazon Marketplace ?

$ 190.99 - $ 440.00 (New) am I getting spoiled by the low prices and fairness of our little community here, or what ?

    Aqualung my friend
    don't you start away uneasy
you poor old sod, you see, it's only me.
    Do you still remember
    December's foggy freeze
when the ice that clings on to your beard is
    screaming agony.
And you snatch your rattling last breaths
    with deep-sea-diver sounds,
    and the flowers bloom like
    madness in the spring.

    ...worth every penny. :D

Well I'm a common working man
with a half of bitter - bread and jam
and if it pleases me I'll put one on you man
    when the copper fades away.
The rainy season comes to pass
the day-glo pirate sinks at last
and if I laughed a bit too fast.
Well it was up to me.

That disc has been changing hands for extremely high prices for many years. This is nothing new.

The last one sold here for $175, not much cheaper than the Amazon low price

Cue the Jethro Tull lyric quote :)

It's supply and demand. High demand + low supply = high prices.

  10. Amazon Marketplace is notorious for sellers listing CDs at over-inflated prices. Notice how very few of these actually sell. I could put my copy up there for $1 million but that doesn't mean it's worth that much.

That said, the DCC of AQUALUNG sells at expensive prices but can usually be found for under $200 (as eelkiller notes above).

    Or...

    and the products of wealth
push you along on the bow wave
    of their spiritless undying selves.
And you press on God's waiter your last dime
as he hands you the bill.

You can get it cheaper on ebay if you're patient and hit a lot of auctions. I got one mint with slip for $140 a few months ago.

Someone I know has the answer to that list yourself as a seller and put the same item cheaper.

He tells me they then drop theirs and it continues.

"But what if someone buys yours"? I ask, then he's forced to sell the one he bought at a loss, however he assures me it's only happened twice.

Beware, you've been warned. Can't give any more info, or I'd be 1 friend less.

Amazon lists are a bit wonky, because:

    - there's no history of sold items
    - sellers try it on in every category
    - the auto price-matching can run wild

The no-history of sales works both ways. Sellers can't see the demand, so they mark up. Buyers can't see the value, so don't know what's a good deal. I've tried selling high (1c below lowest) and low (really low, $5 in a list of $30+) and if nobody wants your disc it doesn't sell.

It's a moderate disservice to the used market that Amazon is used for pricing by stores now, because it simply isn't an indication of a valid market level. There's a row of 'KFOG' samplers in amoeba here as a testament to that.

Anybody know if Amazon sell aggregated used sales information, like eBay do?

Back to the subject.. the DCC aqualung is still the only one in the series I keep myself.

I've seen this game played a couple of times. The wise sellers don't use automatic repricing on collectibles.

Indeed, this is a very expensive cd to get these days. I've had mine for a long time and have no idea how much I paid for it, but I'm sure it was like $25 or so - because I snagged it the day it came out.

Just be patient and look around often, you never know...

  18. I am trying to snatch it for cheap on e-Bay last few months.

    No success so far.

However, I have to say the prices quoted above are really exaggerated. It goes quite often for US 100 - 130.

We couldn't give these away back in 2000.

"Why is it so much?" the fans whined.

"$24.00 is too much. The regular CD is only $8.00!"

    Whine, whine, whine.

Who's whining now, eh? The current prices are outrageous.

It's simple, really. The internet, and the advanced sharing of information folks didn't have back then to explain to them < me! > what the advantages were to these "gold discs". Most of us just stumbled onto them occasionally in the bins at Tower, Borders, wherever, and didn't know what to make of them. They were more expensive than the regular versions. Was it because they were "gold-plated"? Who cares about that? A million reasons, but the main one is information and spreading it out to the fan base. Pre-internet, and "forums" like this one, that didn't exist then, there was no way to really tell us. Sure, a few folks were "hip" to the advantages, who must now be all the sellers on Ebay with the seemingly endless supply of "sealed" DCC gold discs for sale, jeez, what a nightmare. Just like real life, I guess, though, it seems a shame that those that are the most worthy are the ones paying through the nose for these audio-orgasmic gold discs. Whew! Sorry for going off....anyone have a wet towel?

I still haven't made my point... ok, - lack of info explaining the differences/advantages to the target audience < us! > due to a lack of a viable venue for such information. There.

    Thanks for listening - John

  23. Clearly when you redo it for AF this will rectify the matter. ;)
