I was unaware of that - good to know! Any extras or alt mixes in those boxes from the digipack cd singles released around '91 or so here in the US?

Yes,PTA is the worst one(mastered by Emily Lazar). The -remastered- Box Sets 4-6 also sound compressed. SOTU was better but the Heaven single was again a step backwards-way too loud.

Again yes,Heyworth did a good job here but i think most of the original albums from Speak And Spell to SOFAD also sound decent though A Broken Frame and Black Celebration always sounded a bit muddy to me. The US and Canadian masterings for Black Celebration had that strange double intro for A Question Of Time(mastering error,i guess?)and compared with the european releases the title track lacks punch when the synths set in at the beginning. A complete different mastering. The original UK and some other european versions had a nasty loud click sound at the beginning of Stripped.

The 2006/2007 remasters fixed some minor issues like click sounds and stuff. The Things You Said on MFTM has a corrected fade out compared to the original version. On the other hand the remaster of A Broken Frame missed the first seconds of Satellite and funnily the remastered Violator had reversed channels on Policy Of Truth.

But overall the re-issues are nicely done.

Got the collector's editions today and listened to couple of them already (Violator, Songs Of Faith And Devotion and Music For The Masses) and they sound good to me.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but I have some questions regarding Depeche Mode CD/SACD/DVD releases.

Here in the UK I know that there are many releases; in the case of Exciter we have the original CD release CDSTUMM190, the remaster CDXSTUMM190, the hybrid CD/SACD/DVD DMCD10 and the Collectors edition DMCDX10, which in terms of content is the same as the hybrid CD/DVD release (correct me if I'm wrong) but is more rare (OOP) and hence much more expensive.

Now, I don't have SACD capability, so I would not benefit from the SACD layer, but for what reasons should I buy the CD/DVD issue? Is the PCM stereo on disc 2 the same as that on the CD (disc 1)? In fact, I don't even have a decent DVD player to hand in my listening room so other than the documentary, is it worth me buying the 2 disc version?

Lastly, is the remaster preferable over the original if I don't already have the original?

    Thanks

Exciter dvd has 24/48 if I remember correctly as do most of the deluxe editions, I've noticed that a 5.1 fold-down to stereo is better sounding than the 2 channel remaster on most of the editions, cd's (CDDA) are only capable of 16/44, for me the 5.1 mixes are fun and vary in quality from one set to another, some claim 24/96 in 5.1 but I think I found a few in 24/48 again it varied from set to set, they are nice if you want the extra mixes and b-sides in one package or the 5.1, but sound quality I prefer the originals, others may have opposing views, these are just mine :)
EDIT: Yes the PCM Stereo uses the same remaster as the CD
EDIT2 :The sacd sound quality does not justify some of the prices these are going for, in my
    opinion
    EDIT3: Ultra in 5.1 rocks

The hybrid SACD is only around £11 here in the UK, unless I have this wrong. As I say, there's a DMCD10 and a DMCDX10

I have 2 EU editions, this is for Music For The Masses SACD=DMCD6 NonSACD=DMCDX6 not sure if this is cut and dry, the only way to know is to check the back to see if it has the SACD logo, if you can get the sacd for that price might as well grab it :)

I have that wrong then. You're right, the Collectors Edition (which I assume is the only SACD version) is DMCDn and the other, non SACD version is DMCDXnn.

I guess if I don't have SACD anyway it's not an issue.

    Cheers

Yeah kind of confusing, when I was buying them (had to import them) I always had to ask if the logo was on the back, many sellers would list it as SACD when it was not

Thanks Amazon US shows it also, has a couple scans, looks like a one disc re-issue of the remasters

Bit strange that it's labeled as the Collectors Edition isn't it?

Note: I don't see them on the US site.

Nothing in the forums, would be nice to see the SACD's re-issued for people that don't want to pay silly prices

I have The Best Of Depeche Mode Vol 1 (where's Vol 2?) the sound quality is good but the track sequence is disorientating, so I resequenced Vol 1 in chronological order, it's now a much better listen!!
    The chrono track sequence is: 17, 2, 6, 3, 11, 16, 5, 8, 18, 1, 4, 14, 13, 7, 10, 15, 9, 12.
I don't have any Depeche Mode albums so I'm waiting for a Rhino Original Album Series 5 CD set, hopefully they'll choose the 5 best mid period albums.
    FWIW, Trevor.

I have the West German CD and stripped has no Click at beggining.
Also have West German CDs for first 8 albums.
Can someone tell me if the these are prefered? I have not heard the US Sire CDs
    to compare, how are they?

I have a mixture of early WG, UK Mute CDs, and a Japan Pony Canyon disc (all non-remastered). I have heard many Depeche Mode CDs over the years and in my opinion, those are best sounding masters (apart from the UK Black Celebration which does have a bad click at the start of Stripped). The early albums released in the US on Sire do seem to differ in mastering from the UK Mute/WG Intercord and if memory servers me correctly, A Broken Frame US Sire CD is dull and muddy. I don't recall anything else of note apart from what's already been mentioned about the A Question of Time on the US Black Celebration. The later digital recordings probably don't differ between US/Europe.

Stick with what you have - the WG Sonopress Intercord 846.xxx are the best Depeche Mode CD masters imo.

The later re-presses by EMI Uden or Optimal are identical to the WG (or only German after 1990) Sonopress for the first three albums. The Sonopress for "Some Great Reward" is different from the EMI Uden one, maybe just level shifted. I prefer the Sonopress.

For "Black Celebration" the Sonopress (no matter whether blue striped or black-faced) are the way to go, if you don't want to have the nasty click at the beginning of "Stripped". A later EMI Uden pressing unfortunately has this click.

Up to "Black Celebration" there are blue striped German Intercord releases (INT 846.xxx) and black/red/blue-faced CDs (INT 836.xxx). I tried CTA and BC and found no differences between the blue-striped and the color-faced discs.

Until now I found no different pre-remaster masterings for MFTM, Violator and SOFAD.

Not sure about the Euro of Songs of Faith, but the German cd has extra artwork not included on the US
