    Hi all,

I've been having an issue where I get a distorted sound out of one speaker when playing vinyl ... mainly mono records, but I have heard the issue in stereo records as well.

I have cleaned and removed static from these records and the issue persists.

Has anyone had a similar issue or may be able to diagnose the issue?

I'm new to vinyl so forgive me if this is an easy fix.

    Turntable: Pro-Ject Primary E Phone
    Amp: Yamaha R-S202 Hi Fi
Speakers: Monitor Audio Bronze 2 Bookshelf

    Thanks!

Check your tracking weight and anti-skate setting are correct.

Have you determined the problem is with the turntable and not one of the other components? Checked all connections?

Could be a myriad of issues:

dirt/gunk/dust in the suspension of the cartridge

    dirty stylus

    misaligned stylus

Give your cartridge a good cleaning first.

Swap your cables left to right starting at the turntable to see if the static moves to the other side. Do this down the chain as necessary to isolate where the static is coming from.

We don't have much to go on.

    1. If you've performed any troubleshooting, let us know what was attempted and the result.
    2. Can you confirm without a doubt the issue only happens when playing vinyl?
    3. Have you tried switching channels at the turntable? Let us know if the problem is now on the other speaker or the same one.

First, try a cd player in the system.
Straight away you will know the answer.
Now the problem with mono records
I'd is something I,m familiar with.
In days of old preamps had mono
    Switching.
    This cancels out vertical modulations.
As mono is lateral movement. When both channels are paralleled.
Now with the mono switch in
There is a noticeable reduction in crackle
    And pop, and distortion.
Now, even with this switch set to mono
One channel will be smoother than the other, well, not always, but more often than not it will be so.
    So.....either using balance control,
Or volume pot( dual mono) you can silence the noisy channel.
Mono is better using one channel,
I find. Buddy Holly really boogies in mono set up thus.
The simple production, lack of compression, and phase issues really
    Makes him in the room.
    As others have mentioned,
Final set up of vta and overhang
Etc all play a part, not to mention
    Dirty records.
    Worth it though

    Hi,

    1. I have swapped the RCA cables around on both the turntable and amp, and the static switches to the other speaker. I have also swapped speaker cables and seen the static switch, and I have also bought new speaker cables to see if that would fix the issue. I have moved the turntable to a different line input in the amp and still hear the static I have taken the amp to an audio engineer who confirmed there were no issues with the amp.
    2. I have played music via Bluetooth and did not hear a static noise. I have also listened to both AM and FM radio through the radio option on the amp and not heard the static.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

The anti-skate on the Pro-Ject Primary E is pre-set and I can't adjust it. I will check the tracking weight and get back to you.

It would appear the TT or the records are at fault.

Can you take the records affected to someone else's system and have them play them, see if you get the same noise? If so, then the record is at fault. If not, it seems the pickup arm, cartridge/stylus, alone or in combination, are misaligned or faulty

    Hi,

I'm thinking the same thing. I've bought a new cartridge and will see if that helps with the issue. It's an issue that's developed over the past month or so.
