I mean no disrespect intended, but I can live without any of it although I must admit I've fallen behind a bit. I listened to some tracks of Rough and Rowdy, and just wasn't terribly carried away like I am by his earlier work, particularly before and including Blonde on Blonde.

Not a Dylan specialist but I know that the answer is going to be yes, you do.

I mean what post 76 can compare with anything before it?

I think I've heard Oh Mercy, pretty sure I haven't heard the other two, is any of that Dylan in his piano playing stage?

I'd actually say these are the only Dylan albums from any era that one needs, my favorite three by a wide margin.

Sorry if the thread is objectionable to you in any way. It is, I thought, fairly clearly, an invitation for discussion on pre 77 to post 77 Dylan, in terms of your personal preference. And whether or not it is worthwhile to invest in post 76 Dylan. Oh and I have done my home work, over decades.

That's interesting. I'm not sure I've ever heard that before, but it actually seems to be a recurring opinion here. Maybe I have to give it another listen, feel free to post links to your preferred tracks.

Love And Theft is right around the transition, if you mean when he stopped playing guitar onstage and made the piano chair his primary station.

The other two predate that, Oh Mercy by some years. In fact, he was the bonafide lead guitarist for the TOoM show I caught. Larry Carlton hardly saw a solo that time!

In the end, this thread shall probably include every Dylan title, maybe even Christmas in the Heart.

I don't know you, but I can relate to the feeling. However at least Slow Train Coming and "Love nad Theft" should get a chance.

I love a few others and there are some general favourites from 1976 on, but those two are quite popular and I like them quite a lot.

If your heart is with Bob Dylan's albums through 1976, I'd urge you to at least consider Street Legal (1978). IMO it completes the era and is a very fine album.

A more polarizing additional suggestion from 1978 (recorded live in 1978/released in 1979) is the widely disparaged Bob Dylan at Budokan. It has similar sonic textures to Street Legal (albeit with bigger and more controversial production/arrangements). This is not a widely popular choice, but I love it and you might too.

Thanks, that is what I meant. I went to several, and I hate to say it, bad concerts when he was manning the keyboards. I mean Dylan was always unpredictable in concert, but there were enough real gems to keep you going. However when he started playing piano, and not because of his piano, but because of how ****ed up wasted he was on state, it felt like you were just getting ripped off.

However it does contain Every Grain of Sand, which is among the great songs Dylan wrote and recorded.

I have not been without a copy of Budokan since it came out. I only have a digital, albeit high quality, recording of that now. That may be my fist post 76 purchase!
