Here's one; if it doesn't sell you on Infidels, nothing will.

As to the '76 cut-off, for now I think that's sensible. I know there are Street Legal fans out there, but save it for later. If you're in the wrong mood it will sound an awful lot like self-parody.

Any Dylan collection is lacking without "Infidels." It's a career top ten for me.

Not that familiar with his later work but Infidels and Shot Of Love are both very good

And they sound nothing like each other either

Street Legal is my favourite as well (today anyway LOL)
and I highly recommend it! It is REALLY the start of his "spiritual stuff" if you like....

If you enjoy the "early style"
    you may like :

"Good As I Been To You" and "World Gone Wrong"

both are very enjoyable and harken back to the days when he would just play acoustic sing and blow some harp
I find I play these discs often.

even though all the songs are covers they are wonderful renditions!!
and you really get to hear just how good of a guitarist Bob is!

Have a listen to Trouble No More
    Just 1st 2 or 3 discs
I’m not a Christian and I don’t like that kind of Christianity that Dylan’s preaching
But you can’t doubt the emotions behind it that pour out of the vocals and the killer band
I spent months listening to it almost in disbelief at the difference between what I thought and what it was
    Extraordinary record
Look at Spotify or Tidal because the cost can be prohibitive but pretty sure you will want to own it

After a few months I went back to Shot Of Love and was amazed at how good it was after not hearing it for a long time

Christmas in the Heart indeed. I have it now for 3 years and Yuletide has never been so beautiful. It's great music and secures me an hour of having the living room for my own.

For me, his post 76 work is as important as his pre 76 work.
So my answer is : yes.

    Slow Train Coming
    Oh Mercy
Time Out Of Mind (warning : intrusive Lanois production tricks...)
    Love And Theft
    Modern Times
    Tempest

    Seriously ? On « Good as I Been to You » ?

This record contains some of the sloppiest, couldn’t-care-less guitar playing I’ve ever heard on a record released by a major artist on a major label. Everything about it from the dreadful cover to the song selection to the aforementioned guitar er … « playing » reeks of disinterest and boredom with the project.

The sheer folly of covering two tracks which are masterclasses in guitar-playing, Nic Jones’ « Canadeeio » and Paul Brady’s « Arthur McBride » is at best, perplexing and at least, ill-advised nay plain daft.

Most post 76 Dylan albums have their charms. Essential for me are
    Street Legal,
    Slow Train Coming,
    Infidels,
    Oh Mercy,
    Time out of Mind,
    Love and Theft,
    Tempest and
    Rough and Rowdy Ways.

Tell Tale Signs is IMO one of the stronger bootleg series releases.

Also his 10's albums with cover material are worth listening, but for the casual fan one of them might be enough. I suggest "Shadows in the Night"

  20. The simplest way I can answer the original question is to say that when I listen to Bob Dylan, all the albums I choose to listen to are post '76. That is simple preference.
I can't imagine my listening diet without Oh Mercy or Time out of Mind, for example. I listen to Tell Tale Signs often, too, so make of that what you will.

One doesn't *need* to listen to any music; it's something we do because we enjoy it. Perhaps it keeps us sane. But not if you don't like it. And lots of people don't enjoy Bob Dylan's music; another section doesn't want to listen beyond what they loved many years back, or finds the voice difficult, all that is fine by me, but I feel it is also OK for me to enjoy the whole lifetime's work.

You probably do. Start at 1977 and get everything up to 2020. You should be right then.

"Shot of Love" is one of my favorite Dylan albums. I prefer it over "Infidels." Give it a, uh, shot.
