I'll be honest. I've tried to like him and only succeeded with the Truman Show. Is it a case of different sensibilities - me being from the UK (to me he completely overdoes everything, with absolutely no subtlety). The effect he has on me, is kind of like the visual equivalent of audio brickwalling.

Do US people generally like him?

I do like some American comedy - eg Larry David, Seinfeld, and Woody Allen, as well as Marx Brothers and some others, but Carrey kind of sums up a strain that I've never really been able to get into.

    What do others think?

No. I find only about 10% of his stuff funny. Otherwise I'm mostly annoyed.

I know others here in the U.S. who feel the same, but there must be many who like him to garner the attention he has received. Come to think of it, I do know one person who loves him.

Back in 1994-1995 he was probably the funniest person on the planet. Not so much these days.

Check out the TV sketch comedy show In Living Color, he (and everyone else on the show) was hysterically funny.

It’s like the Three Stooges. Sight gags and over the top routines. It appeals to that inner kid.
For the UK, I’d say Benny Hill is sort of in that vein. Monty Python too. Silly walks and all.

I thought the documentary Jim and Andy was interesting and kind of strange. I don't think he really got Andy Kaufman down, but he seemed to think he did.

However, I did like his quote when he talked about how his dad gave up being a musician to be an accountant, and then it didn't pan out too well. He said something like he decided it was better to fail at something you love than to compromise and still fail.

I don't. I find his type of comedy daft rather than funny.

Geeze, no! Going all the way back to "In Living Color" I've never found Jim Carrey anything other than cringe-worthy.
