Do you believe "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" was intentionally about LSD?

It's good fun. I'm sticking with this one for a while. It's one of my favourite pictures of Olivia.

The reggae bit is brilliant...even today.

  4. I think The Beatles version of Lucy is by far the best. I prefer William Shatner's version to Elton's.

Well, for the record, it is equally as good as the Beatles' version ;) And that's all I'll say...

Here, comparing two works of art is like when sixties bands discussed the Vietnam War. :biglaugh:

    I actually prefer Shat's "Mr. Tambourine Man"...but I'm a big Dylan-head.

    Diplomatic as ever, Mr Bass.:D

I think the Beatles version is better. I just have fond memories of getting to know the song through Elton's interpretation.

Mind you, Elton's version is very good. Almost as good as his take on Lennon's 'One Day At A Time'.:)

I think the painting inspired it and the drugs interpreted it.

Yes! I love how Lennon surprised everyone, by appearing at an Elton John concert in '74. What a show! And Elton performed "LITSWD" with him :righton:

Wow! 115 votes and we are almost tied!

Now if I could just get you all to admit that the Beatles created the Paul is Dead story for the fun of it.

I don't think it was entirely coincidental but neither poll choice is satisfactory

I like Elton John's version quite a bit, but the Beatles version is still my favorite.

    Purely a co-ink-ee-dink.

I mean it's not like there was anything psychedelic about Sgt. Pepper.

John and Paul always lied about their songs. Everything from what they're about to who played which part in it. They loved how we would speculate and theorize their meanings.
To keep it short and simple, it's about LSD. I also prefer Elton's version of the song. That's the only song that I have in mono on my Sgt. Pepper playlist. It sounds even more atmospheric and dreamy in mono.
The stereo version sounds hollow and lifeless. The Love version is clearly the superior version but it's a remix so it doesn't count.

This is the most likely scenario considering the time it was written was during a heavy drug use period.

Elton's version is OK, but could do without the reggae section. Not bad for a fan playing his hero's work though.

Honestly, some people are going to believe what they want to believe. I tend to pay attention to what the man actually said, both in regards to this song and in his blunt honesty about drugs and their part in his music over many interviews.

I agree, but why did John bluntly admit to drug references in so many of his other songs, then? It doesn't make sense.

To me the lyrics are very childlike, free association and cartoonish. So no I don't think lyrically it is at all druggy. The music is what tilts it a bit in that direction.
