Been a big fan since I first saw them on the Tonight Show early in 1990. I've seen them live several times. Their first four albums are essential, in my opinion. But I could never get into John Henry. They returned to form with their next album, Factory Showroom. Their albums have been hit or miss since then, but there are always at least a few good songs there. They have made around 25 studio albums, not counting several EPs, live albums and compilations.
That's a shame. They did Berlin (and the rest of Flood) at both of the Boston shows a couple of weeks ago. Wonder why it was omitted in Ithaca?
I get it. I've been working through my pile of postponed tickets lately - so many Boston-area shows got rescheduled on top of each other this month and I've had to skip a couple to be functional at work (I literally had a slate of five nights in a row scheduled earlier this month). The TMBG show was a blast. They did highly encourage (through e-mail and signs at the show) masking and most complied, but it wasn't required. I did have a mask on and jumped up and down like an idiot for the 2+ hours of the show. Their vocals are 'pitchier' than I remembered, but the band is great, the setlist was well-paced, the banter was fun. And they gave out free paper crowns. I can't imagine you wouldn't enjoy it if you're a huge fan.
Anyone feel qualified to talk about masterings of TMBG releases? I recently acquired the 2013 Australian expanded CD editions of They Might Be Giants and Lincoln. It seemed to be the most convenient way to get all of their early material. That is, they include all the first two albums, the non-album stuff from Miscellaneous T, and the bonus tracks introduced in Then: The Earlier Years. (Then: The Earlier Years is essentially the same collection as the two Australian CDs combined, but it's missing the album version of "Don't Let's Start" and the single version of "(She Was A) Hotel Detective.") However, I noticed several of the Australian tracks were very loud, so I decided to open "Ana Ng" in Audacity to see the waveform. Take a look: . I opened the file in JRiver and it gave it a DR of 8. However, I went to the Dynamic Range DB to see the stats for the 1988 CD release, and it shows a DR of 11 for that version of "Ana Ng." Are the tracks found in "Then: The Earlier Years" compressed in a similar fashion? Just wondering if anyone else has any comparison notes or if I should try to track down the original releases. I'd be missing the bonus tracks, but they're more just curiosities anyway.
Yes. Get the vintage albums, EPs and comps. They started brick walling everything In the late 90s and that includes remasters. They are equalized with a bit more low end but they hurt your ears.
The originals are definitely quieter. The remastered download of Lincoln that came with the 2018 repress is hideously loud; the one that came with their debut was better but still compressed. Pretty much everything from the mid-90's onward is really loud, with albums like The Spine being some of the worst offenders.
I'd suggest getting early versions of the first two albums plus either Don't Let's Start (1989) or Miscellaneous T. Each collects the best of the early b-sides etc. and makes a great standalone album in its own right.
I just remembered I also had "Ana Ng" from A User's Guide to They Might Be Giants. It's a little better, with a DR of 10. Although it doesn't get into details about mastering and sources for each release, the This Might Be A Wiki website is a treasure trove of details about TMBG albums and shows.
Yes. I checked mine today and "Ana Ng" has a LUFS loudness rating of -8.2, so around 8 DR. The dynamic range was 8 LUFS. My original pressing is up in the attic and not ripped. I haven't had a chance to get up there and grab it to compare.

The other recent reissue was the 2022 Mink Car, which has the same DR numbers as the 2001 CD release.
@seanw , thanks so much for posting those DR values. Were the digital 2018 rerelease of Lincoln and 2019 rerelease of The Pink Album just on online platforms, or do you know if there were CDs as well? On the TMBW site, there’s a quote from John Flansburgh about the remastering of Lincoln, saying it’s “Nothing too freaky, but some smoothed out EQ and of course more contemporary volume levels.”
As far as I know they were only included with the vinyl reissues. I think you may be able to download at least one of them directly from their online store, but aside from that they don't appear to be available elsewhere. The remasters are vinyl only, so no CD options. I remember people commenting on Facebook about the compressed sound of Lincoln. I think Flans responded at one point, saying something about how they had tried to update it and balance everything. Neither of the guys seem big into fidelity and audio equipment, so I doubt it's something they have much interest in.
I'm not aware of them being issued on CD. The two albums available on Bandcamp are definitely the remasters (I had it confirmed by TMBG management), so I'd guess the ones being sold on tmbgshop.com are too.
Nickelodeon was my babysitter so I'm familiar with the work of the Johns. I've got Then: The Earlier Years and Flood on CD.
