Do you find the Sinatras' 'Somethin' Stupid' a little creepy?

I like the song and all, but I just can't put aside the father/daughter thing. Some love songs could work on both a romantic and familial level, but not this one. I know it's not just me but I don't think it's universal either.

    So...you?

Not the biggest Sinatra fan but really like this one. Don't find anything creepy at all about it. It's the equivalent of a father and daughter singing karaoke at a party, but the dad happens to be Ol' Blue eyes. If Nancy were to come out with revelations that Frank was a John Phillips type then it would be creepy but I think it's safe to say that's unlikely

At the time, it quickly became known as 'The Incest Song.'

Personally, I don't think it's creepy - the singers are not 'playing' themselves and if you don't know they are father and daughter, you aren't bothered.

Not as creepy as this father/daughter duet that went #1 country in 1977:

This was not a confessional singer/songwriter act.
It was a well done pop song.

  6. No. Two singers that happen to be father and daughter singing a song. Not creepy.

    This is creepy:

On a different note, I always found this an odd song for a duet. They can't both have said somethin' stupid like 'I love you.'

This could go in the 'Things you totally got wrong about music as a kid thread,' but I also remember thinking that Nancy Sinatra must not be a good singer because her part was so simple. (Not that her father's part in this song is melodically complex.) I just thought they wrote her a really simple line, akin to Linda McCartney's early synth lines.

Despite my comments in the opening post, it's probably my favourite Frank Sinatra song in terms of pure enjoyment. (In terms of artistic achievement, I'd go with something else.)

No. They knew what they were doing. And it was a hit song, so obviously there was no public backlash or anything.

I didn't find the setup of "Something Stupid" creepy at the time. This thread though, reminds me to revisit the creepy album covers thread for truly creepy premises.

I never made the connection from music to creepy on this song. But, yeah, if they recorded it today it be no surprise if a bunch of people wanted to complain about it. Sign of the times.

Definitely not creepy. A great piece of pop. And the strings are awesome.

Well I wouldn’t sing this song in a karaoke with my mother.

    I could have predicted this.

The Kendalls had a run of fantastic country songs in the 70s and 80s. Royce sang harmony to Jeannie’s leads, and a third part was also added.

People who find something creepy about this are trying much too hard. Plus, they know nothing whatsoever about the long history of family acts in country music and bluegrass.

If you don’t understand country music, its origins and its ethos, you would do well to remain silent on this issue, rather than making yourself look foolish.

I never heard anything about "The Incest Song." Top 40 played it all day long. Don't think people were so quick to think in those terms then.

Not creepy at all. A great performance. I love how they sing lagging just a bit off each other and almost without emotion. Like you get when love delivers a shovel to the face. Another Lee Hazelwood special.

Great record. Nothing creepy about it.

When I think "creepy duet", I think Jagger and Bowie. :)
