However, unless the engineer is truly old-school, the signal is still typically fed through a digital delay on its way to the cutter-head to make sure that the groves are spaced an optimal distance apart.

I think it was the oil price shocks of the 70s that led to inferior pressings. CDs have been suffereing the same fate (although not the same cause): cheaper looking CDs and flimsy packaging. Even the cheap grey area CDs of the 80s and 90s were better made.

I switched to CDs back in the 80's and have never looked back. However, after trading in around 200 LP's for CD money, I suddenly realized how little they were actually giving me for them so I decided to keep what I still have, and well...decades later I am very glad that I did.

My turntable does not currently work but I have plans to rectify that and will soon have access to my LPs that I do not currently have on CD.

As a previous poster has said and I agree, I'm too old to give a c**p as to whether or not people think I'm "cool" or not. It's just not the least bit important to me.

Let 'em scoff. Just stay the hell off my lawn...;) :)

Indeed. After the 1973-1974 Oil Embargo is when some music industry brainiac had the brilliant idea to start using recycled vinyl, which ended up with impurities like paper from the label ending up in the mix along with the equally brilliant idea of making the LPs even thinner to stretch that supply of PVC.

The result: lots of pops and clicks and warps.

By the time CD's arrived, I was so tired of dealing with noisy, warped vinyl that I switched over gladly.

The collecting is a physical task. I use digital and streaming in the car - no other option - but 99% of the collection is physical (ripped and backed up) and always will be. CDs are the go. Lps for fun.

I find it weird that you find it depressing. Is the point of your post to feel bad for him or just make someone feel bad ?

Vinyl snobs, they've got such a great sense of humour.

Whilst many of us like vinyl I'm not anyone actually knows it is sonically better.

I remember the thrill of being able to programme tracks from CDs on my first player. By remote control too, no less.

I hadn’t been so happy since my first VCR player allowed me to tape favourite shows from the TV.:D

He prefers vinyl for that, too. I usually let him play with my Bonnie Raitt albums.

I love that post as it manages to put down so many things all at once. That takes dedication.

My wife not only scoffs at it, but abhors it. She tried to convince me to just purchase one CD a month. THAT didn’t work ...

Something that really bothers me about that is all this talk about making room for bigger screens on the dashboard.
I don't need to look at F'n screens on my dashboard, and neither do any other drivers - we need to be looking at the F'n road!
All this distracted driving is driving me up the wall!

It’s ok people my coworkers scoff at the music I might play at work. Some like it others cringe.

Those old CD's seem to have been made differently from modern ones. I have an Onkyo SACD player and it often will not read a modern CD for many attempts until finally it does. Stick in a 1980s made CD and it finds it immediately! Odd!

I actually scoff at myself because I shouldn't need to buy CDs. I haven't listened to music directly from a CD in years.

I’ve been ridiculed for making *any* purchases.

One friend, after I bragged about my latest CD haul, said, “You still BUY music?”

And this was 17 years ago (when Napster was in full swing).

    Still buy them, BTW.
