I’m talking films like The Princess Bride, Airplane, and the Monty Python films, whose humor I would describe as stupid. Do you like films with stupid humor?

Yes - very much - and much of the humor in the Holy Grail is exceedingly clever.

    Python is far from stupid.

Depends on whether I find them funny or unfunny. But, yes, I do like some of them.

Hmm, AIRPLANE and NAKED GUN movies, yes.

Will Farrell and Adam Sandler movies, no.

I wouldn't describe the humor in any of those films as stupid. Monty Python and the Holy Grail, for instance, can be silly but it was clearly written by some very intelligent people. Same for Mel Brooks movies. There's a difference between silly and stupid.

In my mind, stupid humor would be something like Grown Ups or The Zookeeper. Just lowest common denominator lazy crap. And, no, I don't like those.

Well, if we’re talking strictly crappy dumb films like Grown Ups or The Zookeeper, I don’t like them either.

But I recall enjoying stuff like The Man with Two Brains back in the day.

I also wouldn't call The Princess Bride "stupid humor" either. Most of the jokes were fairly sophisticated.

I'll agree that Airplane is mostly stupid. "The hospital? What is it?" "It's a large building filled with patients but that's not important right now."

"Surely you can't be serious." "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley."

A The Princess Bride joke like "I'll put down my sword and you'll put down your rock and we'll try to kill each other like civilized people." - is a more sophisticated joke because it occurs on the second level, that if they were truly civilized they wouldn't try to kill each other in the first place.

    YES.

The Jerk is one funniest movies to me. I would quote a few of my favorite lines, but I would get kicked off this forum (the one "picking up some extra work" kills me)

    Pretty broad strokes there.
    Python is NOT stupid.
    Airplane is NOT stupid.

Porky's films are stupid. Police Academy films are stupid. Most Adam Sandler films are stupid.

The genre for most of the films mentioned in this thread is slapstick. And yes, I like slapstick if it’s funny. The Naked Gun is the funniest movie of all time.

I wouldn’t categorize The Princess Bride as slapstick. The humor in that film is sophisticated, as noted above.

Repeating “My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!” ...” ad nauseum is NOT sophisticated humor.

    It’s a stupid joke.

As he is dying? Over and over? Great scene.

“We are the Knights who say... NI.”

    “It's just a flesh wound.”

    “I am not the Messiah!”
“I say you are, and I should know. I’ve followed a few.”

Is it a boy or a girl?”
“I think it’s a bit early to start imposing roles on it, don’t you?”

    The entire Lumberjack Song...

Yes, to a point. I like Mel Brooks, Python to a lesser degree (yes it is stupid) and others--spoofs like Tropic Thunder--but draw the line at something like napoleon dynamite, which is beyond stupid and not funny at all. When it comes to sitcoms, I think a show like Friends falls in that beyond stupid category. That show made me laugh maybe once or twice and I gave it plenty of chances.

Sometimes the most inane gag will slay me. My wife almost walked out of the theater when I couldn't stop lauhging over this line in Men in Tights:

"Your family changed its name to Latrine?"

"Yeah. Before that it was S***house."

Not stupid. Silly, not stupid. Stupid is guileless. Silly has some intelligence behind it.

  25. This is about as good an answer as any I agree with.
Silly, stupid humor...I like quite a bit.
Stupid, stupid humor...No time for any of it.
