Voyeuristic stuff, for example. I'm a curious guy, but I'd never screw with someone's privacy, so watching it in a movie gets my "fix".

Or someone wanting to rob a bank and live a luxurious life, but who either didn't have the guts to do it, or having the knowledge that you're going to get caught, and thus, a vicarious thrill by watching movies like them.

Rear Window - one of my favorite movies

We're all voyeuristic to some degree.

Ha, yeah.. I was once frustrated so much in traffic I thought of the movie, and laughed inside when I thought of just getting out of my car, wondering how people would react.

I think we can add most or all output of the following genres: revenge fantasies; caper movies; teen comedies; pornography.

I'd agree with all except teen comedies - I'm much older :)

I think that’s the whole fascination with the hero’s journey. It a look into what a particular path could be. It should mirror yet transcend real life, to allow the viewer to look at their own life through that lens.

Actors get to have the most fun. Imagine impersonating a hard nosed cop. You live it for 40-120 days then you return to your normal life.

You bring up something I didn't think of, but very interesting... Some actors become the character, and it might be hard for some to transition back.
