Would anyone be interested?
Okay, here goes... I was fiddling around with the Translate app on my iPhone the other day when I got the idea for this. I have six groups of ten songs which have had their first lines translated into either French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish (which are the only Latin alphabet languages on the app). There are equal numbers of each language, two in each section of ten. I'll just post two rounds at the moment, and see what the response is. If people seem to like it I'll post some more. Even if you don't speak any of these languages, I think there are little cues in most of them that make them identifiable and there's a stupid little 'story' by way of indicating the theme of each round. Usual rules apply: one answer per post, wait ten minutes if no-one else posts before answering again, ideally a full answer of song name, artist, and language into which the lines were translated, but if you're able to translate the lyric, but don't know the song, then please post the translated-back words as an aide to others. No guarantees made as to the accuracy of translations, it is just an app, after all. And, please, if you have any knowledge of any of these languages, and you come across any laughably wrong translations, please share them with us. Correct answers, as ever, indicated with a "like". Part 1: KLCA FM plays the hits (in which radio station KLCA, its name a lame pun on the word 'cliché', lives up to its reputation as it plays all the songs you've heard a thousand times before, and will hear a thousand times again if you if you keep listening to this station. But stay tuned, for the new programme director has other ideas) 1. ¿Cuántos caminos debe caminar un hombre? / ¿Antes de que lo llames hombre? 2. Into uncharted waters (in which KLCA's programme director leads a bold management buyout to cut the station free of the shackles of the Clear Channel empire with a pledge to set about exploring a hitherto dark and mysterious world: that of lesser played singles and rarely played album tracks) 11.
10. Not really correct German for "We are Family" (Sister Sledge) Edit: Now that I think about it, it's not really wrong either, just weird.
I know five more, but will wait for others. The fact that I'm able to read all these languages helps a lot to correct awkward translations
17: Inca Roads (Zappa), and this one now is definitely incorrect German (weirdly enough translating the verb "come" twice, once at the start and once at the end of the first line).
Only seven left now, one overplayed rock track... 5. Cuando necesito buen amor / Siempre vengo a casa contigo Two each of Portuguese, Spanish and Italian and one German.
13. Monkees - What am I Ding Hangin' Round? Looks Spanish to me (which happens to be a German saying for "I don't understand at all")
Yes, the English equivalent is "It's all Greek to me". Only three left, if anyone wants a shot: 5. Frio tarde da noite há muito tempo / Quando eu não era tão forte, você sabe (opening track from debut album by U.S./Canadian band, fair to say it's widely seen as their best) 15. Oh, não é solitário / Quando você está vivendo com uma arma (first line of this song echoes the last line of the previous track on a cult album by still active rock legend) 19. Cuando necesito buen amor / Siempre vengo a casa contigo (title track of a country-rock album)
