Do you regard "Real Love" and "Free as a Bird" as real Beatles songs?

I remember reading somewhere that Harrison didn't want Martin to produce it. He insisted on Jeff Lynne. The story about Martin's hearing was used to avoid embarrassing him for being blocked from producing the new material.

Maybe one of our forum experts could verify this story (or disprove it)?

From a perspective of their debut album...no.
    From a "White Album" perspective...yes.

it is a terrible drum machine masked by a Ringo snare produced at a Lynne infused Wilbury tone to help hide the machine beat...I think...

I voted previously that they are Beatle songs albeit Anthology jingles.

This does not answer the question, but I clearly distinguish RL and FAAB from all other Beatles songs in that when I listen to songs like 'Help!' or 'Nowhere Man' (or any other vocal by John), John is very much alive and I tend not to dwell on his subsequent passing. In contrast, when I listen to RL or FAAB, it's hard for me not to think about the circumstances surrounding how those two songs came to be. As a result, I personally associate a degree of sadness with RL and FAAB.

When the background vocals kick in, it still sounds just like the Beatles even though it's 25 years later

I think you mean Free As A Bird. The line that starts 'Whatever happened to the life that we once knew' is on John's demo. I believe Paul came up with the rest:

'Can we really live without each other?
Where did we lose the touch?
That seemed to mean so much
It always made me feel so...'

    :)

Altho that first bit was in the Lennon demo, probably would have changed it if he ever finished the song. Actually I think he abandoned the song, pretty sure Real Love would have eventually been recorded, I've read it was in the running for Double Fantasy. All 4 Beatles got a writing credit on FAAB, George wrote the part he sang, they may have just been kind to Ringo.

If Paul, George and Ringo (without John) are considered to be the band "The Beatles", then yes, they're Beatles songs.

They weren't written to be Beatles songs. The demos were not for them to be Beatles songs. They are John Lennon songs finished by McCartney, Harrison, Starr (and Lynne) who were no longer in The Beatles.

I'm a big Beatles fan but not overly precious about this 'dilemma'. I don't ever think about these two songs unless I'm playing the Anthologies, so I would vote no, not real Beatles songs but nice enough oddities among the other oddities they share a home with.
Actually, that's a bloody good answer if I may say so myself.

'Taint reading this whole thing, but if they got stuck on the end of a Beatles "Greatest Hits" CD, it would annoy me and I'd say they don't belong. They're attributed to the Beatles, but they're irrelevant to the 'canon', just like the video in George's lawn with Ringo slapping his thighs while the other two strum acoustics is irrelevant to the 'canon'.
