I think that my first single was either Elton John's Friends/Honey Roll or J. Geils Bands' Centerfold/Rage In The Cage.
Know what's crazy, I vividly remember the first 45 I ever bought, and where I bought it, but for the life of me I can't recall the 2nd one I bought. Anyone else? EDIT: it might have been "Some Like It Hot" by The Power Station, but that's just a total guess.
I bought 6. I remember going to Clark Drugs (now CVS) in Westlake and poring over their Top 40 (and beyond) many times before getting to start purchasing, but in the Spring of 1978 I did get to pick out a handful. Maybe I was a good boy that week? (I was 7). Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive Bee Gees - Night Fever Wings - With a Little Luck Billy Joel - Movin' Out Heatwave - Always and Forever Electric Light Orchestra - Sweet Talkin' Woman
I believe I got two at the same time, soon after I got a record player for Xmas 1981 (or birthday?). Terri Gibbs “ Somebody’s Knockin’ and Jacky Ward “Something On The Radio”. At Gibson’s. I would’ve been 10.
My grade eight science teacher would hold a monthly contest- he'd give us a science riddle to solve and bribed us with a free 45 for the winner. I won once and bought Cheech and Chong's "Earache My Eye" which was burning up the charts at the time. I still have it!
The first 45 I owned (given to me by an aunt) was Hound Dog by Elvis Presley. The first one I bought with my own money? Help! by the Beatles. Still have the latter, the former misplaced many decades ago. Yeah, I'm old.
My grandmother bought "Somebody's Knockin'." I have very clear memories of sitting in her living room, listening to that 45 as well as Anne Murray's "You Needed Me" and Linda Ronstadt's "Blue Bayou." And sometimes the LP of Willie Nelson's "Stardust."
First single bought with my own small allowance money was Simon & Garfunkel "Homeward Bound" . I think the b-side was/is "Leaves That Are Green". I just checked and it was 1966, so I had just turned 6. Pretty sure the shop was on 5th Avenue in Brooklyn, NY. That part is hazy as my older brother walked me there.
I feel your pain...but not really. 28 degrees here today, slight breeze, blue sky. Wind chill: 27 degrees.
