Now that Epic has the rights to most of AC/DC's catalog, do you think we will see Back In Black on SACD????

Of course, we could see anything that is a best-selling catalog title.

    :) It is catching on...

Here's some additional news on the upcoming rereleases. Unfortunately, it makes no mention of possible high resolution releases:

Epic Records, which recently signed AC/DC following its tenures with the Atlantic and EastWest labels, will begin remastering and reissuing the quintet's catalog next month. The first rereleases, are due February 18, including 1976's High Voltage (with liner notes by rock journalist Murray Engelheart), 1979's Highway To Hell (liner notes by Ernie Welch), 1980's Back In Black (liner notes by Rolling Stone magazine's David Fricke), 1981's Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (liner notes by Rolling Stone David Wild), and both the single- and double-disc editions of 1992's AC/DC Live (liner notes by Don Kaye).

On March 25, Epic will reissue 1977's Let There Be Rock, 1978's Powerage, 1981's For Those About To Rock We Salute You, 1986's Who Made Who, and 1990's The Razor's Edge.

Epic will release the rest of AC/DC's catalog later in the spring, although EastWest will retain rights to 1995's Ballbreaker and 2000's Stiff Upper Lip.

Besides the new liner notes, all of the albums will feature remastered sound, expanded track information, and more photos, as well as a feature dubbed ConnecteD, which will give buyers access to a special website with additional extra features.

Meanwhile, Image Entertainment is planning a February 18 release for Rock Masters, a 42-minute DVD from a 1977 AC/DC concert at the Hippodrome in London that features "Let There Be Rock," "Problem Child," "Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be," and "Rocker."

Once again, what is the strategy here. Do you take a chance and buy these or wait for the "vapor ware"- ie SACD. I've already got so many cd's and lp's. Honestly, I'm trying to dicipline myself not to buy unless it's a Hybrid.

    Well,
Seeing how Sony has, for the most part, sidestepped releasing anything really big on SACD (yes I know there have been some dribs and drabs of major catalog releases on SACD) - other than the latest announcement regarding the Dylan catalog - I wouldn't hold my breath on seeing much AC/DC on SACD.

    One can only hope though!

I disagree. I think Sony's strategy has been to concentrate primarily on releasing the classic big sellers and avoiding the more obscure stuff: first, there's the Miles Davis catalog ("Kind of Blue", "Round about Midnight", "In a Silent Way", "Miles Smiles", "Sketches of Spain", etc.), and such releases as "Tapestry", "Stardust", "Headhunters", "Legalize It", "Cheap Thrills", "Blonde on Blonde", "Live at Folsom Prison", "Time Out", "Mingus Ah Um", etc. I'm sure someone more familiar with the classical cannon could fill in the blanks there, but the common thread is that these are all big sellers (usually the biggest sellers) from major artists. And now they're working on the lion's share of the Bob Dylan catalog for release this year and have helped bring in The Police catalog, the Peter Gabriel catalog, "Dark Side of the Moon", and the early Rolling Stones catalog by subsidizing their production costs. I think their strategy has primarily been to focus on the big catalog titles. I mean, more, more, more is always appreciated, but I've been fairly well impressed thusfar...

I hope Sony will release AC/DC on SACD, but with no announcement to that effect, I am not holding my breath. Whether one should buy the remastered CDs now is a tough call. I figure they will be relatively inexpensive, so I may pick up the new version of Back in Black.

Be sure gentlemen to post about these releases here.

God, I would just about die for a decent sounding copy of Highway To Hell and Back In Black! I sure hope they get it right.....this time.

I'm hopeful that the remasterings of their catalog sound good, until I know for sure I'm gonna hold off.

It will be interesting to hear if people feel there's any improvement in sound quality over the current remasters that are out. As much as I like AC/DC, I think I'll be holding off on buying these new releases (in the hopes of future high res versions) unless there's a general consensus that the new remasters have a very noticeable improvement in sound quality since I already own all the original releases as well as all the current remasters.

I will, however, be rushing to pick up the DVD!

I guess I wasn't clear in that Sony has been "in dribs and drabs" (as I stated) brought out some major releases - but not enough in my estimation to point to anything that would lead one to believe that they will release the AC/DC catalog on SACD. As far as Miles is concerned, I think a lot of his catalog has been released because it is music that the "target market" which has probably been defined by Sony as the main "early adopter" market for SACD, would buy and listen to - as you notice the lion's share of SACDs have been jazz and classical. Pop/rock is just now making inroads to having major exposure on SACD.

But to think that the entire AC/DC catalog will show on SACD is being very hopeful at best. I can see maybe "Back In Black" as the only, or at least the first, SACD that Sony will release from AC/DC. And that might be it for quite awhile.

These are all assumptions and opinions on my part though, taken from Sony's previous marketing strategy with SACD. But if they want to release the entire AC/DC catalog on SACD - I'm there.

Just as I am there on March 4 when the Police come out on SACD; I am there when the entire Gabriel catalog comes out on SACD; I am there when the 15 Dylan titles come out on SACD; I am there when "DSOTM" comes out on SACD. Come to think of it I am just about there when most SACDs come out - ask anyone who knows me personally - I buy way too many SACDs (considering I already have over 2500 CDs and thousands of LPS).

I have not heard the current Atco remaster of Back in Black, but my old Atlantic CD (not a first pressing) could be improved. At this point, I will give Sony the benefit of the doubt and be positive about what they will turn out. In my experience, Sony's recent remasters have been excellent.

Do you think there will be analog vinyl remasters? There is supposed to be vinyl, but not sure if they will be analog or not.

Perhaps as a general rule this may be the case, but they really botched the Judas Priest remasters IMHO.

I'd really like to see them reissue Let There Be Rock on DVD. Perhaps we'll get that at a future point.

Amazon has the DVD listed with a bit more of a description. Unfortunately, there appears to only be seven songs contained on it, but at least the price ($12.99) seems reasonable.

"Heavy metal's bad boys tear the roof off the London Hippodrome in this concert filmed at the height of their popularity. These irreverent, outrageous rockers celebrate rock 'n' roll at its most fast and furious as original vocalist Bon Scott leads the band through storming versions of their greatest hits! Songs: Let There Be Rock, Problem Child, Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be, Whole Lotta Rosie, Bad Boy Boogie, Rocker, T.N.T. "

That is definitely the correct strategy these days regardless of weather it's a cd/dvda/sacd or lp. I've been burned too many times and would wait for feedback even if AC/DC was on SACD. I don't believe for a minute that the same mastering engineers that are putting out horrible sounding redbooks are all of a sudden going to change.

    Powerage details?

I sure hope the Powerage they release is the hard-to-find one (the German pressing, I believe) with "Cold Hearted Man" and a different mix.

I can't wait to find out how this new Let There Be Rock CD compares to my mint copy of the Porky's Prime Cut LP pressing :p .

Is this alternate version of Powerage currently available anywhere on CD?

    Re: Re: Powerage details?

I'm pretty sure you can find it on bootlegs, but not legitimate CD releases -- but I *could* be wrong.

Check out www.ac-dc.net/discography1/index.html for some good info about the Powerage releases.
