Despite having a surge protector as part of my system, I always unplug it whenever I’m at home during a thunderstorm. My system is insured though. Am I just being overprotective or do some of you the very same thing?
I get it and I do sometimes unplug if it's REALLY wild outside, but the fact is, I'm almost 37 and nothing I've ever owned of any variety has ever been hurt by a lightning strike. I know it can happen, but I think the chances are pretty low. If it makes you feel better to unplug, who cares right? Go ahead and unplug.
Ah you’re a lucky man! While I was in college, my PC got fried along with much important things for college… The backup was on a secondary harddrive inside the very same PC. Took me an additional half year to finish college because of that… So yeah, the results of lightning damage can be quite something!
Yes, when I am home if there is a severe thunderstorm which is very common this time of the year in FL. Many times though I am not home and never had any problems. So I guess it is one of these things that seems like overreacting but as they say better to be safe than sorry.
If I’m away or if storms are expected I pull the plug even though I do have protection. My system is protected by Triplight and had been for years. Lightning is unpredictable and discretion is the better part of valor.
What am I going to do if I’m out of town? And I’m not going to unplug it each time I leave the house. For my system, I don’t worry.
Absolutely! When the stereo is not in use... it's ALL unplugged. If there is a storm or thunderstorm... it's unplugged. No chances.
I voted yes, I did that yesterday before I went out. I do use an EquiTech Son of Q but don't want to chance it
I do. In 2020, while living in San Antonio, lightning strike knocked out the power. The stereo system was unplugged but the HDTV, network router and cable box were not. The television and router survived the hit but the cable box did not. I had to take it back to Spectrum to exchange it for another one. And if I am gone longer than 3 days away from home, I unplug everything.
I just have two plugs to pull. One that leads to the 20A Nordost power strip for my source rack, and one for the amplifier.
I also unplug when I have a random power outage, which happens frequently with Southern California Edison's delightful service.
Usually, yes, especially if the storm is a very bad one. But I admit, I've been getting more casual about it since acquiring my Zero Surge protection.
I got 30 years on you, and I’ve never had a lightning strike damage anything in my house either. Also like you, I unplug when the weather gets too scary.
Not ideal, but I always turn off 2- power strip surge device every time im done listening & don't listen to main rig during really awful weather as I don't want power outage as I'm listening. We loose power fairly easy in bad weather.
