As far as melodic pop/rock goes, this is pretty faultless ....

So what part about the horror of 80's production is not being understood?

I think they got through that unscathed because despite the 80's stuff bands and musicians still respected them. Which goes to show, the 80's didn't really hurt them at all. Other than make them look silly, like a lot of other bands during that era.

Had they not gone along with any changes they would not have had a recording contract unless they could've come up with some straight up rock that still placed on the charts. If they wanted to sell records and play bigger venues they had little choice since they really had no other viable alternative to achieve chart hits. I don't blame them. They were out of ideas, the world had changed and they wanted to stay current. It's not like they were the only ones that did it.

No band was really that immune to the era in some form or another. If they didn't tease their hair, they sure added some 80's production values to their albums. Some more than others but showing up with a record that sounded like it was produced with 1975 production values would not have gone down well with any record company hoping to sell a lot of records.

Hey, I'm not afraid to send pics of me from the 80s - I actually don't have any!

I was a chubby teen in the 80s and very self-conscious, so beyond school pictures, I don't think I have any photos of myself in the decade...

I think they were a much better band when Roger Fisher was in the group.

Skinny black tie and the haircut date it a bit.
Not too bad, unless you're wearing parachute pants....

Im a flannel and blue jean guy, always been, so every 20 years or so I look stylish.
Did buy a pair of parachute pants in that '87-'88 timeframe, wore them out once and they never saw the light of day again.

    "The music must change
But is this song so different?
Am I doing it all again?
It may have been done before
But then music's an open door" - lyrics by Pete Townshend

I can not understand how some music fans can be so rigid in what good music is. There was an open air of experimentation that started in the late 70's and progressed into the 80's that gave us a variety of new sounds and songs in pop music that had everyone scrambling to keep up, or out do the last big hit. It wasn't all great of course, but you can't keep making the same album over and over again and expect the public to embrace it. (Insert AC/DC jokes here).

I'm glad Heart, Yes, Journey, Kansas, Genesis, Eric Clapton and Jefferson Starship changed their sound in the 80's. I still enjoy the 70's material, but I enjoy power pop and melodic rock just as much. I applaud these and other "legacy" artists from the 70's who were not afraid to embrace new technology and sounds that were different from what they did in the past. It's a sign of creativity that I personally respond to.

Quite true. And I shouldn't have used your quote for my rant. Nothing wrong with someone having specific tastes. I for one don't care for Dylan or The Band, which would shock many here. I just get defensive when there is a generalization that 80's production = bad/sell out.
