"For Susan on the West Coast Waiting. From Andy in Vietnam fighting." Genius is not enough of a noun to describe Donovan.
It is surprising and refreshing to know so many still love Donovan..I wonder how many here are "new" fans (post 60's and 70's ). I grew up seeing him on Smothers Brothers Show, Sullivan, on the radio everyday, etc, so it was and is easy to love him, but how did the rest come to Donovan...I'd be interested to know.
RT is known for playing various types of music, almost all of which has involved the suffix ‘rock’. He has a large audience (a fair bit larger than Donovan’s at present, I’d say) and his tours and gigs tended to sell out. Hence, though he might modestly dispute the label, he is a ‘star’. A ‘rock star’.
Tribute had referred to me as 'our recent star', and so I was just being humble. I'm a huge Family Stone fan too! A great help was he too in helping me figure out how to post my pictures correctly My collection warranted its own thread, I became inspired, and began one called Donovan memorabilia
I think he is one of those artists who's stock will go up when he is gone. I got massively into him a few years back and brought a lot of his music, and i managed to watch him a few years back when he did a small town tour of the uk which stopped off in my town. He sat on a cushion on a rug on the stage, and shared a few stories from the 60's and played some solo acoustic numbers. It was great. I don't listen to him as much these days but if i do then i tend to pick out the early years compilation.
Richard Thompson may be very talented and may have a good-sized audience, but he will never even come close to reaching the status Donovan achieved as a "cultural icon". When Donovan decides to perform, he also sells out his shows.
I'd argue more than a few and he's also got some excellent (officially) unreleased albums. My biggest frustration with Donovan is that he discounts his later material to focus almost exclusively on '60s material in concert.
